    Cattle fly questions..

I recently purchased a ranch and did some trading for a couple of heifers. Checked on them today and noticed they had quite a few flies on them. I'm only planning on having a few head mainly as a hobby, but I'd like to take care of them the best I can. I do not have a squeeze chute so eat tagging them for flies is nearly impossible. I was thinking about building some back rub oilers.... but what exactly do I use in them? Can I make them wick from a jug so I don't have to wet them as often?

Go to Tractor Supply. They have the fly rubs in two sizes. They also have the pesticide made to mix and pour on it. Only takes a couple of applications a year and it will control the flies. I put them out near water and also hang a couple of fly traps each year. Helps a lot.

You can get some Cylense from a feed store and get a big syringe and squirt it on their backs. I treated 28 last weekend using this method. Just put a sack of range cubes out and walk by them treating as you go.

This if you don't have pens, chute, horse etc

Yep start feeding them cubes asap. It'll get them used to you and calm. Then just spray them. You need to get a pen asap.

This if you don't have facilities. Cylence, Ultra Boss, or Ultra Sabre. Can do it while they are eating cubes, or get them in a crowd or small pen.

When I need to treat mine with ivomec pour on I will feed them some cubes in a line on ground. Then measure out and pour into solo cub or can with top cut off and just throw it on their backs. If its just flies your worried about you can get pesticide and spray them or they make mineral that will pass through them and not allow the fly eggs to hatch in the cow poo.

This is the best way to do it even if you have working pens or not we have working pens but we just drive up to them in the pasture and shot them with fly spray!
