    Career change.....what would you do?

If you were or are in a high stress job would you be willing to take a pay cut in the 6K/year range to go to a job that is less stressful and a better fit for your family?

I have with my current employer for 19 years. Used to really enjoy coming to work but the last couple of years have been really tough. I no longer enjoy what I do. High stress levels, basically on call 24 hours a day M-F every day of the year except vacation and holidays, working mainly a day shift but often have to switch to late evenings and nights.

I was offered a job with a well established company last week. The job is a M-F, no weekends, no nights, 10/hours a day. The pay is 6K less (8K if you count profit sharing checks) but the stress load and steady schedule are very appealing. Benefits are the same as I have now.

Not looking for any of you to sway me one way or the other, I've already made my decision. Just wanted to see how many others would do the same.

That's hard to say. If you make 100K right now 94K wouldn't be so bad.
If you make 30K right now 24K would be a pretty big drop.

Yes. I think every family can find 10K of non-essential spending that can be cut

I don't know if you have small children or not, but my experience was I had no idea how the stress and hours affected my family until after I made the decision to do basically what you are talking about. Best decision I ever made.

In a heartbeat! I personally won't die rich, so dying a little poorer but enjoying life more is OK by me.

I had to do the same recently as well...glad I jumped ship.

Stress will eat away at your happiness.

I would take the less stress/less pay job if the difference were $6k.

I have a soon to be 4 year old daughter and a 16 year old son. It sucks getting home and being so wound up that it's hard to sit and relax with them.

I think you would be doing yourself (and more importantly your family) a favor by being able to enjoy your time with them while they are still under your roof. Good luck with whatever decision you make.

Wouldn't think twice about it for less stress. Now if it was 50-100k less,,,, I would have to think a little longer.

$500 a month is no brainer to switch it sounds like on the surface. Is there room
To get back to current pay with the new company at some point?

100% less stress. Wouldn't lose sleep over the pay cut.
