It doesn't just happen with 13 yr olds, the wife and dil were discussing the eclipse, got to the part of happening between 11:00 and 1:00 both agreed that they weren't staying up that late at night. I had to ask them how the moon was going to pass between the earth and the sun in the middle of the night, it took a few minutes and a little more explaining for the light bulb to come on.
eclipses happen at a regularity that I'd assume an explanation would be ok and not a judgement on common sense. There are a high number of adults that think that the blockage is sufficient to look at it.
