    Question on Building Stairs

I am tearing up the stairs in my house and replacing with rough cut, distressed, stained pine. It was previously carpeted blah. Everything will be screwed, not nailed.

Please share thoughts on quieting them down a little bit. Any thoughts on putting something thin and cussiony between the treads and the string so that it's not straight wood on wood? No need if they are glued/liquid nailed down?

Thinking of insulating between the tread and the sheetrock.

Good ideas? Something else I need to consider?

    Thanks!

Liquid Nail will work. That's what's done on second floors. Liquid Nail on joist before plywood.

When you say you are tearing out the stairs , are you only pulling the carpet or are you pulling Treads and risers to leave the bare stringers exposed?
Are you only replacing the Treads or are you replacing the risers too? Have you pulled out any of the carpet to see whether or not the risers are sitting on top of, or behind the treads?
Is the distressed pine thick (~1 1/2")? Or is it pine flooring (~3/4")?
Sorry for the 20 questions, but stairs can be a challenge to retrofit depending on the original construction. You always have to be thinking a "step" ahead. Hardie har har.
We put PL 400 behind all treads and risers. With rough pine treads, screws and adhesive will be your best bet.

Tore everything out down to the stringers. Replacing with new 2x12 treads. I guess riser and toekick are the same thing? If so, they are being replaced with new pine 1x8. Once all fitted in, I'll pull everything and have the kids get after it with a chain. Then stain, poly, and reinstall.

With that, what so you have for me?

Also, I welcome suggestions on techniques to distress.

I do have a tread tool which I have found is worth 100 times what I paid for it!

This project has reminded me that carpet tack strips are the #@*#*%# devil.

your first tread and riser and also your last tread and riser will dictate what thickness, widths, and toe nosing or overhangs you will need to make your staircase work out correctly and balanced.
Since you live in Dripping, see if you can lookup Henry Boesl. He lives out on the West side of town. He had a carpenter named Mark that worked for him about 12 / 14 years ago. Mark built a multiple compound stairsace with multiple landings in my house. He is good.
What I am saying is that it may require modifying the stringers before you cover it since that's what dictates how it finishes out. It's usually not simple tearout and replacement.

Are you changing out the stair rails as well?
