    Red Dot scope question

what the max distance a red dot is good for? My son has a Ruger 10/22 with red dot and shoots it well. Looking at buying an AR15 for him to shoot because of collapsible stock and was wondering if a red dot would work or need to get him a regular 3-9 scope. Shots would be 100yds or less.

Imo if the dot is small enough 100 or less are do able. But I have found the dot can cover to much Target for my liking.

I would say it's good for as far as you can shoot well, just like a scope; but instead of crosshairs it has just a red illuminated dot. on mine you can change brightness and size of dot.

it does not project a beam of light.

The size of the dot matters. 2 or 4 MOA is good for under 100 yards. A 1 MOA red dot is better for a bit longer range but not as bright or easy to acquire in fast shooting situations. Shooting a red dot sight enables shooter to have both eyes open and is better IMO for close range & self defense

If you want the best of both worlds, Leupold makes a MK8 1-8x scope that has advantages of RDS at 1x but can be cranked up to 8x with a BDC reticle

I shoot an Aimpoint Pro on my AR and can hit at 100 yards consistently.

Been looking at the Vortex Sparc II. Any thoughts on that one?

Primary arms. I have 3 and they are hard to beat for once a year battery replacement. Next would be a vortex viper for a small package.

I have a TRS25 on a Rossi 92 45LC and a 300 BO that I put together for the kids. They work to 100yds but I haven't shot them further. If you have a 3 moa dot, its hard to shoot tighter groups than that. For sighting in, I will use small paper plates close to the same size as the dot at 100 yds than then turn the power down on the red dot and center the dot in the plate. I have a magnified scout scope on a Mini 14 with about a 4 moa dot that I sight in the same way. I find it easier to maintain the gap between the dot and edge of paper plate than cover a dot with a similar sized dot.

One thing with the TRS25 and I bet its the same for all red dots is that they don't gather light. Last time out for hogs, I could see the pig fine through the 3x9 but my daughter could not make it out even with the red dot on a low setting.

                      I have a Burris set at 50 yards and a 4 - 14 for the longer shots.

                        what he said.

There's I've seen aimpoints used to 300-400 easily and seen some folks shooting from a bench hitting steel at nearly 1000. its all up to you and your determination to practice. The moa of your dot just tells you how much itll cover at 100.
