What tips can you give me on judging axis bucks? Post pics if you have them or links where I can do some reading up or just list a few pointers. Thanks!
for me its usually if their antlers are a least 26"x28" (field judging). its all about the size of the animals on ur property tho. but for me if they have big bodies, big antlers, and are mature then they're shooters.
The ones I've observed were moving pretty fast, hopefully they will stay still long enough to judge them. The Mass and color of the antlers should prove the larger trophy class. I seen a lot of the younger ones I passed on were lighter color and even white. As far as the length ???I judged some at 18-24", and my BIL said he judged the ones at 24-32". made me question my not taking one.
I was told you will definetly know the 32-36" when they come out....still waiting on that day
These two are young. The one laying down is going to be an awesome buck, soon. The other thing I was going to mention is they loose there antlers throughout the year. You may see a mature buck that is still in velvet or is still growing.
Like KingsX said "I judge em on how hungry I am at the moment!" otherwise high and wide, heavy horns, more than 6 points, shoot em'. Have some help to load them too!24 x 36 is a good one.
Ok, maybe I can help out. If you are wanting a Gold Medal buck you need to look for main beams at least 30 inches long. His eye guards and cottle tines must be decent, with mass throughout his antlers. Axis come in all shapes, but I prefer a wide, heavy deer that sweeps back off his head and then curves upwards. The axis I am used to looking at will dwarf any whitetail, in fact the deer I killed bottomed the scale out at 250lbs! Don't shoot the first one that comes in and you will soon see what is a big one.
any tips on what to look for in the field? I know they are around 35" tall at the shoulder so if one is feeding with his head down is that a good way to judge them? What should I look for with there head up? I am looking for a gold metal animal but because any animal I shoot is a trophy to me I am at a little loss on judging a axis. Thanks for all the help
Tip of nose to the base of the horns is right at 12" use that to measure how tall horns are. 12, 24, 36. That helps me tell how tall horn are and how long brow tines and cottle tines are.
