    Last Minute Rifle Hunt HELP...

I got invited to a 5 day hunting trip to Tennessee, rifle only?! O! well, its not the office....

Anyway, I dusted off the old 30.06 (3 years since I shot it last). Put in 3 rounds and didn't make a single adjustment. It still shooting consistently 1" high at 100 yds... Perfect! Ummm... not so much...

So my friend tells me with a Mil-Dot scope I should have sighted it in with the recticle powered opened and not zoomed in at 100 yds. Which makes no sense to me what-so-ever. Why would you have a scope that zooms in and not zoom it in, is my theory. He said that I could be taking shots out to as far as 200-300 yds. Yes, my rifle zooms out to 250 yds then it goes to telephoto. Anyway he says that it wont be sighted in at those distances since I sighted zoomed in at 100?

I've shot a doe at just under 200 yds many years back with the same set up. I told him he was on crack but now I am nervous about if i can take a shot beyond 200 yds? Was he right or wrong? I don't want to make any adjustments to the sight? Does anyone have a ballistic chart so I can figure how high to hang a bullet at that distance...

My .30-06 is much simpler, but I sight it in 2" high at 100yds. That puts me dead on at 200 and 9" low at 300. I've only hunted with it this year, and although I got to kill 7 deer with it I'm not comfortable enough to shoot over 300 yards yet. I zeroed at 14power and killed 6 of them on 4.5. There should be no difference.

Where are you hunting in TN (just curious)? That's where I do almost all of my hunting.

If your talking about a parallax adjustment it doesn't matter.

sorry not a gun person at all..
the far end of the scope farthest from your eye it adjust 0-250 yds then to Telephoto

The near end lens closes to your eye it powers from 6x-22x zoom. When sighting in the rifle @ 100 yds. I had it zoomed in @ 100 yds. @ 22x zoom. All three bullets were 1" high over the "X" consistently.

Can someone lead me to a ballistics table. I just need to know if it will shoot flat out to 250 yds? And how high do I have to hang it if I am shooting at 300 yds.?

i think you are fine with the 100 yards but he probably thought was a bad idea at 22X..most guys say put it in the middle range for sighting it in and not maxed out....i think you will be fine with the way you have it set up

I can't see how it would affect anything at all. Going from 4 power up to 12 power (or whatever your scope's range is) wouldn't affect the aim point of the scope/crosshairs at all. It just affects the view.

One inch high on the target is still one inch high, whether you are zoomed in for an up-close view or zoomed out to a wide angle view.

If you're shooting Remington Corelokt 150 grain PSP bullets and shooting 1" high at 100 you'll be 1.5" low at 200 and 5" low at 250 and 10.2" at 300.

Thanks folks. Having confidence in my shooting and shooting equipment is essential part of my psychological game in pulling that trigger. Thanks folks...

I know my dad used a 700 BDL 30-06 for as long as I can remember. I saw him do things with that rifle I never thought were possible.

Like many have said, it is how comfortable are you with it. My dad knew his gun inside and out, and did not hesitate to take shots out to 300 yds... I know cause I saw him do it.

                            You should be fine.
