    Veterans Question

We spent last week in Waco on vacation (we live in Oklahoma). A few of the places we went, before we would pay, asked if I was a veteran. I said yes and they asked for ID. I don't have any ID stating that I am a veteran. The only thing, that I know of, that Oklahoma has is that you have an option to get a little American flag on the corner of your driver's license showing that you are a veteran. I don't think it says anything, just a little flag. I know that if you retire, you get an ID card for the rest of your life...I figured that was perhaps what they were talking about.

I was just wondering if Texas had some sort of veteran's ID card. I didn't know if you guys shrunk and laminated your DD-214 to carry around with you...or what.

In Oklahoma, I think the only perks I get, would be the VA, a discount at Lowe's and a free meal at Applebees on veterans day...LOL.

Roger that. I've never actually used the VA, heck I've never actually used my discount at Lowes or the meal at Applebees...the only thing I have used since getting out in '99 was my GI Bill. I'm not a combat vet (I was on a submarine for 4 years), so I kinda feel bad about using a lot of the entitlements.

Texas puts "Veteran" on your drivers license you have to prove military service by presenting your DD-214 form in person at the DMV and they scan it . Yea I know one more piece of paper in your paper trail with Big Brother

            This.

When I last renewed my Texas DL, I took my DD-214 form with me. And my DL now shows "VETERAN" directly below the expiration date.

I run into the same issue but have never been questioned when I answered yes. I wont go near a VA facility (personal choice) so I have no military ID except my old expired Active Duty ID if I even own that. I will probably get the DMV option done on my DL if for only maybe a little grace when pulled over speeding ha!

I got cross cannons on my bicep shouldn't that be enough?

1st off its not your fault their wasn't anyone needing killing when you were in.

2nd I've spent 7 month on a ship. worst time ever and you were on a sub so I'm sure its multiplied by 10.

3rd even if you think you didn't do much you still did more that 90% so don't discredit your service.

Understood. I didn't mean to sound as though I were discrediting my service...I just don't want to take advantage of some of the perks, such as health care, that other veterans need more than I do. But, if a man can get a discount on mower blades or something, then...I'm all for that...LOL.

Same Here.. I just use my va card. Though I rarely set foot in the VA. As far as allowing anyone to scan my dd214... nope... not gonna happen.

Why not? You think it ain't already on file with plenty of government agencies?

And for what it's worth... I'm over retirement age (though still working), and the SSA will want to see it (if a veteran) when you apply for Social Security benefits.

Don't feel bad at all, every branch of the military is important to success and protection, on top of that, every job is also important... Even the CS's on a carrier that never cook anything and all they do is use a microwave..... I got out of the navy in 2012, I spent a total of about 2.5-3 of my 4 years active on a carrier. I may have never been in combat, but that ship that I was helping run dropped more than 400 bombs while I was on it. We would be sitting ducks if it wasn't for subs operating in our AO. Every job and every branch is needed.

Except maybe the chair force...I still wonder what those guys do all day...
