Sam Houston Hog Hunts...Where's Best Areas to Start??

    Hey all,

I've only been to SHNF a few times and didn't see much at all. No signs, no hogs, just a walk in the woods basically. I am also kinda new to Texas.

So, I thought I'd reach out and ask those that know the area much better than I ever will. Can you all give me some tips on where would be the best areas to START looking for hogs and hog sign? Should I concentrate on the eastern or western side of I45?
I'm NOT asking for your "secret spot" or anything like that, just some suggestions on where would be best to start my search for a good place to hunt hogs. I have been told that one place to start looking is in the Stubblefield area, around the water. I'd like to have more options, especially if they are from those that KNOW where the good places are.

Any help you can give me would be appreciated.
    Thanks for your time.

I'll help ya out. Find low areas with water, and get away from other hunters, be willing to walk further, watch out for venemous snakes. And have a plan of how to get your meat outta there and let us know how you do!

This time of year, you need to find water. Search along creeks. You can pull maps up to give you genera ideas where low drainages are. Bet if you found a creek with standing water you'd find good wallows. I know of a great spot but it's 2 miles in and is a great deer spot. It's an oak flat near two converging small creeks surrounded by thick pines and a yupon thicket with a ridge leading out of this oak flat.

See deer just about every time I sit in here.. just haven't pulled the trigger bc that's a loooong way to pack a deer out on foot!

Go down south bound feeder road, south of Elkins lake near Huntsville, they are seen on side of road early in the mornings. There is an entrance on the feeder road.

There ya go, trade some info/deer meat for someone else to pull your deer for you

Also, second what these guys are saying. Look for declining ground towards creeks , brush, and food. Found sign scouting with my wife, but haven't hunted it to find them. I see youre in Spring, i thought I'd try the gum slough unit because it was closer, but Sam Houston is a better deal in case you wondered.

              Yeah, I'm in Spring.

I have Gun Slough on my list to check out I've heard it mentioned a time or 2, but don't know anything other than that about it. It also seems to flood quite often after a large rain too.

All I'm looking for is a place where I can hunt hogs and at least have a decent chance of getting a shot if I do my part right. I don't know anyone in Texas, I've been here about 3-4 years or so and don't know a thing about any places to hunt. Not having much luck at getting any suggestions or help though.

              Thought I'd ask here.

Would appreciate any help or suggestions you care to give me.

You really need a map and scout out areas, if your looking for pals there is a fb page for sam Houston hunters and it's way more active than the public forum on here. But the info about finding remote creeks and wet areas will bring you to the game. The thing is if you really find a good spot you should not share it, another hunter can stink spook up your spot and ruin it for the season in my opinion. Also it's a huge forest and you can find as many spots as your willing to search for. Good luck out there stay safe
