When I had my first house built I had to sign off on each quarter of the construction or he wouldn't get the next draft. All my question and concerns were answered before I'd signed off on each one.

Can't stand it when people are disrespectful. Generally I'm a nice guy but when they first start getting disrespectful it changes my whole attitude towards the individual.

YOU control the $, explain this to him (I know he already knows)! I walked away from a custom home build for some of the same reasons, just forfeited my earnest money, well worth it after I found another builder.

I've been involved with GHBA contracts, annual seminars, and a few that had to be resolved in arbitration. If you like, scan the contract and send me a PM. I'll look it over and reduce it to the nuts and bolts (so to speak).
Take this man up on his offer and send him a PM and let him look over your contract, and give you some direction. Being a builder, I'm sure his insight will be worth your time

Don't just "hire a lawyer" - hire a real estate attorney who is versed in real estate issues.

I have had lots of projects done in sometimes the builder/contractor has done a great job and other times not so much. Biggest thing I have experienced is contractors who over promise and under deliver. Just be honest with the customer on timeframes and communicate with them. If an issue comes up and causes delays then just tell them that

I consulted with a real estate attorney I've use many times and then had a meeting with the builder. Oddly to me, the meeting went surprisingly smooth and he is still on the job. Let's just hope he walks a straight line from here on out. The whole thing is disappointing because his work really is good. If anything further develops I'll update. Thanks for all the comments and input.
