RV roof A/C cycle times ...good or bad

didn't want to hijack the previous thread about replacing A/C units in our campers.

Question I have is mine of no use during the hot day. at night it will cycle on and off every minute or so. pretty constantly.

It is set on low cool & the temp control at midway. How long should the unit run before it cycles? This is at night.

It is a 1987 model shasta.

    thanx,

Get a voltage reader and check the voltage in your trailer. That's exactly what mine was doing before I observed the voltage fluctuating from 110V down to around 85V. Something happened to the electric service which we still havent solved. May not be your issue but worth a check.

It should cycle off as soon as it reaches the temp set on T-Stat and cycle back on when the temp rises above the T-Stat. I have seen a lot of time when people run the at a cooler to warmer position (Like 78-80) they will cycle on & off a lot. Try running it at a cooler temp and see it it will do the same thing.

But if it is not even cooling during the day, I imagine you have bigger problems that faulty T-Stat

And, yes if your voltage generally drops under about 108V, your unit will probably over amp & shut down

One thing to look for is there an air vent blowing, my trailer at the lease had this issue so I covered up that vent then all was good.

I will be there Saturday night...will lower the temp and check it. In the morning after running at night, it is pretty cold.

The tv works fine. Would the voltage drop affect the tv?

Check the condenser coils for pluggage...clean if needed... also clean your filter on the intake duct of your A/C unit...

When I had my AC serviced recently, the tech showed me a wire going to a sensor by the coil (I think) that senses ice build up. When it senses ice, it shuts the compressor off and just circulates air until the ice melts and the compressor kicks back on. He said if the coils were not sealed, they would ice up quickly and the unit would cycle on and off every minute or so. He said the same thing would happen if the wire came off the sensor.

you talking about inside or on top? ...guessing the top. I have never taken the cover off the top of the A/C unit on that thing. Guess I ought to...gonna be a hot mama up there.

Inside. On my Coleman Mach, it is on the opposite side of the control board where all the wires from the T-stat hook up to the unit. There is a rectangular piece of dark, high density foam looking stuff and the spade connector wire to the sensor connects behind the foam.

will look into that. I have a coleman Mach as well. gonna take the inside panael off and inspect for anything that looks wrong. Will try to clean the filters.(tthey may be too far gone)

I removed the panel and removed what looked like OEM filters. Had dense blue foam with a grey type foam(that crumbled on touch)

I got some new stuff at a RV place in Georgetown. Cut to fit and it made a difference. the unit ran a while and would cycle at longer times.

thanx for all advice given. It works good for 30 years old.

                        check your Freon pressure.

is there anyway to set your temp range farther apart, say between 67-75... so it cools down to 67 and cuts off and won't come back on until them hits 75.

naah, it is just a dial from warmer to cooler

If the filter was dirty/clogged up, it could have been icing up and shutting itself down.

yeah, the filters were pretty nasty looking. It ran a lot better afterwards.
