So we've decided to buy a Redbone Coonhound in the fall. Though we mainly want him as a pet, I thought it would be cool to teach him how to track deer after they're shot.
I've never trained a dog to hunt or track, so I was wondering if anyone had any pointers.
Funny thing is, I've never failed to find a deer I've shot with my bow or rifle, but the guys on my lease send me on tracking expeditions every year. I am the tracker for our lease... call me the dog I guess. It sure would be nice to have my actual dog do the work in a lot less time. Every year I wind up searching for hours, at least once, for someones deer who didn't get a well placed shot.
thx
