    Zapata Texas

We are on a lease in Zapata for the first time this year, off of 2687. Kind of looking for some insight of you guys experiences in the area, deer quality and what not. What works for you guys in the area and what hasn't. Any info is appreciated!

Was down there for 6 years off and on.

Year 1 we had 1 deer estimated to be over 150 after the fly over

5 years of management later, year 6 we estimated 13-15 deer over 150 and up to 180.

Tons of Javi's and even more quail (both bob's and blues)

    Fun place, but far drive

We hunted around 900 acres down there for five years. It kept shrinking as land owner kept changing the hunting areas. Still great though. Deer, Hogs, Javi all over the place. Good dove, quail, and Predator hunting as well. Coyote and bobcats all over the place. We were low fence, but every year I at least saw a trophy deer. May not have gotten a shot at him, but they are there. This is my first year off that lease. I'm going to miss it a lot. Just too far a drive.

Yea we are driving there from Houston. Took us right at 5.5 hours there and back. I'm sure hoping the deer make it worth the drive, I've heard nothing but good things about it so far!

It was worth it for me. Its just not worth it to my wife any more. LOL After hunting East Texas all my life and going a season and seeing maybe 2 deer. To go out opening morning and see 20 deer, I was in heaven. Down there the rut runs pretty late. Usually December. You keep a good herd of does around, then its on. A couple of times it felt like duck hunting. Bucks running everywhere. Getting them to stop was the hard part. LOL. Good luck to you.

Go to Falcon Lake Tackle and ask for Mr. Bendele.

I lease 1500ac low fence just north of Zapata. More dove than you can shoot. Lots of quail and some pigs. Deer are large body and we have some good horns. I have not seen anything over 150 yet, but we have only managed it for 3 years.

Be patient, big bucks might not start showing up until after Christmas or there abouts.

Good advice, thank you. I'm sure all this green isn't going to help much either!
