So true. I stopped admitting I killed deer years ago.

.......and, what did you name him ? Yeah, much different than when I was a young man.

So sad that this is accurate so much these days. I was raised a meat hunter and tape measures were made for building houses, not measuring deer antlers. Times change, but good deer are still good deer. Now I am a lot more educated on deer herd management and the importance of shooting mature deer, but I will never downplay or look down upon what any other hunter regards as a trophy buck.

I imagine about 99.9 % of my buck kills would get me kicked off most leases these days.

Bingo. I do not mind being a mgmt deer/elk hunter.

Yup pretty crazy what a grown man does over a set of antlers.

I remember when the post-season conversation went like this:
"So, did you get your buck this year?"
                  "Yup"
                  "Cool!"

Man this thread is going to the dumps here pretty soon, so I wanted to get in on the 1st page.

I'm all for trophy hunting but there's a point where it gets unnatural for me. If you know what you're gonna shoot ahead of time and have approved lists just LOL.

Seems like things meant more then too. You listened to the old men talk and BS for hrs, they were men you aspired to be. No more. Now kids stare at iPads, or their phone. There is no real knowledge of the woods anymore either, it's about how much corn is in the feeder, or we had no pic of that deer, of course you can't kill it, etc....The times they are a changing.

Things change and usually for the better. The deer are bigger now and the hair is smaller.

Hunting shows made a lot of that happen. Naming deer would be like shooting your dog to me.

It is a trade-off for sure and I think it is undeniable that overall, things are much better now. These days, at least you have the choice to be a big-time "6 year old and 160 or nothing" hunter or a "putting one doe in the freezer makes me happy" type hunter - or anything in between. That has not always been the case.
