I went by Saturday and visited with the people on the lease directly to the west of us (same family owns the 2 leases) and there were about 15 people there just hunting for hogs and yotes. Talk about loaded with weapons for almost anything, AR's, AK's, SKS, one 50 caliber sniper rifle and 2, yes 2 fully auto 308's. They shot at a range in a draw set up directly behind their camp for close to 5 hours and I don't think I heard silence for more than 30 seconds the whole time. It was really neat to hear the 50 go off (we ducked) and to hear the full autos. Besides all the rifles, they had to have had a pickup load of ammo as much as they shot. If any of the critters anywhere around had not heard a rifle go off, the certainly do now. I went over again Sunday morning and learned that there were 2 of them that were licensed for the full autos and both lived in the Austin area and got harrassed by neighbors every time they pulled out the autos and started popping caps. They said every type of law enforcement has been to their place from locals to BATF to make sure everything is in order. Amazing display of artillery.

I know people can do what they want on their own property or lease but it seems like common courtesy to me not to do the "shock and awe" stuff in deer country during the season - especially early and late. Couple weekends ago I sat in my tripod and listened to several people across the fence blow through about a clip a minute for the last 30 minutes before dark. Don't really know what effect it has but I'd never do it.

Jerp, funny that you should say what you did. We do not lease directly from the land owners, we go through a lease broker(same broker for the neighbors) and he happened to show up Saturday about lunch and helped me look for a deer I lost. He kept saying that he needed to go see them and tell them this was not the time during deer season to be blasting off so many caps and when he heard the full autos go off, he jumped in his truck and hauled butt in their direction. When I talked to them Sunday morning, they did say that he chewed on some tail about so many people, so many weapons and the constant non stop shooting. The broker was not a happy camper.

National Guard put in 3 new ranges, right accross the road from us over the summer. They started one HUGE fire in June, shooting 50cal tracers during a red flag burn ban.
just about anyday I went out this season, I'd get to listen to the range control guys blasting commands over the bullhorn, then just about first light, the M60s, SAWs, and or pistols would unleash.
"Is there anyone down range?.......is there anyone down range?.....the downrange area is no longer clear......firers, lock and load one 20 round magazine......"
Nothing like a peaceful morning hunting, complete with basic training flashbacks.

We didn't hear the shooting and we were in the area from Wednesday until Sunday. As a matter of fact I shot a buck on Sunday.
Mudslinger, sorry we didn't make it over. We got busy doing chores during the middle of the day and in the evening that we didn't really have time for ourselves. We did go eat at the catfish place in Rotan on Friday night. We didn't see anyone with a "Texasbowhunter" sticker or hunting clothes for that matter. Hopefully we can catch up with you sometime in the near future.

SC, I got a late start from Lubbock Friday and did not make it down until later Friday night. Then I spent most of Saturday and Sunday trying to find my 10 pointer. I too, hope we can hook up in the near future. This weekend might be the last I get to go down this year unless I can pull off the weekend after Christmas. Last weekend is definitely out as I will be hunting mulies in NM.

I shot a pig friday morning (.270) and the 5 deer that were anywhere from 35-65 yards didn't seem effected at all. That did surprise me, as I did not really want to shoot and scare the deer. But the boar needed to die.

What were the two select-fire .308s, if you don't mind my asking?
The sound of automatic fire is the sound of freedom. I agree that it is tactless and rude to go loud (unsuppressed) repeatedly with any type of firearm on a hunting ranch amidst other hunting ranches in the middle of deer season. No sympathy for the shooters there.
