Convert pasture from B'ahia to Bermuda

I recently bough my granddad's place and he took the cows off of it about 15 years ago and he didn't do any pasture maintenance once he took the cows off. My plan is to get it back in shape to run a few head. The pasture (about 25ac) used to be nice coastal but has since been overrun with b'ahia (I can't find any bermuda in it now). I am wanting to re-establish the coastal mainly for dry matter yield and also I just hate the way the b'ahia looks.

How involved is this going to be? This is in east texas.

for grazing, the Bahia will be fine, if you just don't like it, then I would Gly the whole place, disc, then have it sprigged with your desired grass.

Bahia is a more hearty drought tolerant grass than the Bermuda varieties.

Several brands of Bahia herbicides. I use Martin clean pasture. Bahia is a good grazing grass though. Once you start spraying, you'll see the coastal is still there. A friend of mine has been working on his hay field for about 3 years now. He started spraying strips so he wouldn't loose all of his hay in one year. Another thing to think about is that once you kill the Bahia, your also giving other undesirable weeds and grasses a chance to get established.

Gly and sprig Tifton. 25 acres shouldn't cost too much and if you are wanting to do it right, there aint much of a better grass for cattle.

          Agreed.
Tifton is nice but you need to watch if you have any coastal or Bermuda. It can choke out the Tifton if you over-graze it.

BAHIA over- grazed grows a short leaf and will not look good to some people. It is remarkably tolerant to drought, out performing many under heavy grazing. It's not so good if you want to bale hay.

Disc and spray is good but it's the wrong time of year to do that. You will be fighting it again next year because the seed heads are up. I would suggest to disc and spray now if you want to get ready for the early fall planting, but be ready to kill those new sprouts from the seeds next year in early spring. It may be something to think about. Disc and spray now, spray what comes up in late February or March, plant what you want then.
