    Slide in camper question?

I know they are way over priced and not worth much a few years later, but so are all campers. Wife is retiring in September. She and I want to travel a bunch. Pro's and cons to a slide in. I'm still able to load and unload it at our destination. Give me your opinion! Just me and the wife and two dogs.

Have a truck with plenty of motor. Cause the wind will catch between the "hang over" part and the truck roof. I had one for a few years. Also get one with the electric jacks. The hand crank jacks are a pain to have to go around each one a little at a time. You can get a controller for the electric ones that raise and lower all at the same time. Makes loading/unloading so much easier.
As to tieing it down when traveling, there are a couple of options. Since mine was small and light (basically a sleeper with lots of storage), I just used ratchet straps. There are plates you can get to add to the front of the bed, between the bed and the cab, to give you tie down points so you don't have to wrap the straps across the side panels of your bed. The campers with the plastic shells (aka fiberglass), will last a long time without leaks if you keep them covered and out of direct sunlight, just like plastic boats (again aka fiberglass).

I'm talking about a brand new one. I know it's worth 1/2 when it leaves the lot. Just curious to the pro's and con's. Anyone bought one and traveled?

It's all about space. A slide out is almost a must if you are spending any amount of time in your camper. The amount of extra space it gives is pretty impressive. Before you buy, look at both at the dealership. You'll understand.

What I liked most about having one is I could still pull a boat or trailer with the camper on, which is why I went that route.

Thanks Steel. Looking the next few days! We really sit out side and bathroom and bed time is when we go in. Anyone else?

I had one for a few years. That is where I learned I am claustrophobic. I could not sleep in the cabover bed. Make sure you can get comfortable with the ceiling so close.

I have one at my lease( slide in ) that i used for a few years. By myself it was plenty good. More than one person its a pain.
I believe you can ould be happier with something like a casita camper. They seem to be bullet proof and hold their value.

Drive to factory to buy one. When I was in sales in the late 90's. The factory would charge u's about $3000 in freight to get delivered from factory

I had one for decades and it served me well. I liked them since you can unload it at a destination and still use your truck, you can still pull a boat without having a huge rolling load. on the other had if some one else is with you it can be cramped unless both are considerate and there will not be a large amount of space to store lots of stuff you want to take.
They do not seem very popular anymore and it is rare to see them out. I guess people have chosen to use the larger trailers so they can drive away from home to sit and watch tv somewhere new.

Dang near every driveway in Wyoming has one in it.
                          They are still plenty popular.....

One downside is that some rv parks won't let you dismount it and then go drive around and explore.

i hope yall REALLY like each other. if you go camping and it rains for a few days and yall are stuck inside that little camper, itll try your patience! nice for quick trip but not something you want to take on an extended vacation.

one of the down sides of having a cab over is everytime you want to go anywhere, you gotta pack up camp OR unload the camper off the truck

you can spend the same about of money and get a bumper puul trailer with alot more room and options.

^^^^^ This X 1000. Keep in mind you'll probably need to spend another $1,500+ to get your current truck able to carry that load. Unless you're always going to just take 2-day trips, you'd be much happier with a small bumper pull in the long run.
