    New / Pending Texas legislation

For anyone curious to what is on the governor's desk.
I think this one, in particular, is great news for our teachers. My wife teaches and has a LTC

    S.B. 1566

Purpose: Creates Texas Education Code § 37.0815 to prohibit school districts and charter schools from having employment rules that prohibit school employees who are LTC holders from keeping handguns, firearms, or ammunition, that is not in plain view, in a private, locked motor vehicle in a school-owned parking area. This does not allow a school employee to exhibit a firearm to cause alarm or personal injury or to violate TPC §§ 46.03 or 46.035. It is important to remember that this law applies only to school employees who are LTC holders. School employees who are not LTC holders continue to be subject to school employment rules under Texas Labor Code §52.062(a)(2)(B)&(C).

This is still awaiting action by Gov. Abbott. If signed, it will become effective on September 1, 2017.

    Here is a longer list:

The 85th Texas Legislature adjourned May 29. In the session, legislators passed several bills that enhance gun-owners' rights in the state. The bills include regulations involving curios, reduced LTC fees, IEDs, employment rules prohibiting staff members at schools from from having a firearm in a vehicle, the legal classification of knives, and more.

While the intent is good, I doubt a weapon in a locked car will do much if any good in an active shooter incident. Still, it might be better than not having anything accessible when teachers have to deal with irrational parents, etc. It really is sad that the school atmosphere has changed 180 degrees from when I was in school.

I don't think the intent to allow school staff to conceal in their car is to protect the students but to allow "everyone" the opportunity to protect themselves to and from work.

That bill wont make anyone safer, but it could prevent someone with LTC from getting fired for breaking policy by forgetting to remove it from the vehicle before going on campus.

Yep. This has nothing to do with campus safety and everything to do with being armed and having the ability to protecting yourself while driving to and from work.

                That seems reasonable.

I disagree with the bill ONLY allowing LTC holders being able to protect themselves to and from school. Plenty of active shooter situations have gone on for enough time for someone to retrieve their firearm and hopefully defuse the situation. I know that it has happened at least once, because I read about it. I can't remember where and when, but I remember it.

That said, I think our pro-gun governor will sign it, and that's a good thing. I personally would have no problem with properly trained teachers carrying in the classroom.

Nothing "common sense" about restricting it to LTC holders.

It's a great change, now my wife can keep her gun with her every day vs leaving it at home mon-fri
Even if it's in the car, still better than at the house. She now has protection to and from work each day.

Those of you who are TSRA members know that they are constantly trying to improve our gun related rights in this state. Give them enough time, and we will have constitutional carry. The gun carrying landscape doesn't even resemble what it was just twenty years ago. I urge you to join if you're not a member.
