We bought a 27 foot bumper pull last July and pulled it to Utah with a 2008 dodge 1500 with the 4.7L V8. It did make the trip ok but I would not recommend going full time using a half ton tow vehicle even on an ultra light camper, ours is 4600 lbs empty and probably around 5500 going down the road. We used Funtown RV in San Angelo just because we happened to be there one weekend and decided to look. The first dealership we went to, American RV, was exactly like you describe. Asking prices were MSRP and they were not willing to negotiate on price. MSRP on ours was 24K, it was marked 17,900 and we walked out the door for 17K even. The buying experience was one of the best I've ever experienced and at no point did we feel pressured or like we got screwed. We have had to take it in for service once and that experience was completely different from the sales side of things but that's neither here nor there. Funtown does have a branch in Cleburne so you might try there. The other thing you might consider is waiting for the RV shows to come around. We went to the big show in Odessa this winter and there were some very nice campers going for 40-50K off MSRP. One in particular we had looked at the same model at Funtown for 93K was 85K at the rv show from a dealer out of Lubbock. My banker suggested this rout also as her and her husband bought there's from a RV show and got a 90K camper for 65K. Her suggestion was to go on Sundays, she said the dealers are willing to take more off after a couple hundred people have walked through it as long as you are willing to buy one that a bunch of people have walked through. I hope this helped, I've had a lot of people tell me we could just stay in Hotels for the same money but we really enjoy ours and plan to upgrade in a year or two to a 5th wheel.

Pros and Cons on size?

Enjoy your travels and talk to RVers along the way.
Dang...now I'm sitting here thinking what we have to fix at the lease on our RV..guess I justified once more we are doing it right...ONE is enough and don't need TWO to worry about and fix....

I've driven one over 40' that had a tag axle and probably won't ever buy another one without it. The ride is just amazing and the extra weight doesn't let big trucks push you all over the road when they pass you.
The length really isn't that big of a deal.....I'm always pulling the Jeep anyway, so it makes for a long vehicle anyway, and you can't back up when it is attached. You just learn to fill up when you can and pass the places that make it difficult to get in and out of.
the nice thing about a diesel is that you can just pull into the truck stops and fill up with the trucks, knowing that you will have a route to exit without any trouble.

We have a 45 toy hauler fifth wheel and an F350 dually tow vehicle. Way too long and tall. Anything longer than 40 ft severely limits where you can stay. And most RV spots don't allow enough room to get your toy in and out, so you end up taking it out before you park in your spot and don't load it up again until you leave. So the garage is wasted space for the most part.
You fuel up at truck stops only and avoid lonely roads for fear of tree clearance! Our next trailer will be no longer than a 35 ft fifth wheel. If the motorcycle comes along, it will be towed behind on a small trailer.
RVs have at least 35-40% markup built into the MSRP! If you can't get a dealer down to at least 30% off that on a new rig, walk away.

Can anyone recommend a dealership close to Dallas area where I could check out a good selection?
