    Any botanists?

Got a 6x6 area in our flower bed that kills plants from the bottom up. Leaves turn brown and crispy and once it sets there is no saving the plant. Have tried several different plants. Put down about 6" new garden mix. About 80% sun, good drainage.

My guess is that it is pH or some chemical got spilled when the pool was being built. I'm probably going to dig the area out down to 3ft and then backfill with new soil but wanted to check in case there are any other steps to try first.

Send off soil samples and you may be able to amend something in there without having to dig it all out.

This will probably be your best bet. I would rather do that then spend the better part of the day digging down 3 feet only to find out that I needed to add a little something to the soil.

Any chance there is a gas line beneath the area?? Could be a leak.

Your local extension agent should have kits to send to TAMU. You can also send to Whitetail Institute. There is also a place in south Texas that does soil sample, but I can't remember the name off hand.

Hoe close is it to the pool? Any chance there's a leak and chlorine is killing it?

This or they could have poured out left over muriatic acid after the initial cleaning of the plaster.

I used to work in this lab back some years ago.

Check for a natural gas line , if you have one, that might be leaking a little. It will kill anything trying to grow in that area.
