    Blown power steering question.

2004 F-350. Blew out the power steering last night. Luckily I was two blocks from the house. Is it safe to drive this thing about 5 miles to the shop? I'm not sure if it's the pump or a hose.

    Thanks y'all.

Man I would be extremely careful if you do . Kinda hard to stop it ain't. I can't believe they engineered it like that.

Stops just fine but makes a hell of a racket when turning. I don't want to risk more damage but with a tight budget I also don't wanna pay for a tow if I don't have to.

          Any mechanics around here?

Either one is easy enough to replace in your driveway. Watch a couple YouTube videos, all your doin is swapping parts.

Call the shop you plan on taking it to and ask them

You should explain the problem better
Power steering may not be the problem
Could be a wheel bearing .
Do a little investigating, put the grin in jack stands and turn loc2loc

Power steering fluid everywhere. Fluid tank is empty. I'm handy but this is above my pay grade.

I was advised by a mechanic not to drive it. Could booger up the rack and piñon.
                    Thanks y'all.

Just had this happen to me on a dodge truck. Had to drive 15 miles with a blown high pressure line. Stopped at Auto Zone got the line, replaced it and I have had no further issues with the pump.

You lose South Austin street cred if you can't address this yourself. :-). Buy the proper ps fluid and see where leak is. Go from there. Should have all kinds of room to work on that truck.

I'll be sure to hand over my man card with the keys to the tow truck driver when he gets here. [emoji1]

That truck has a gear box not a rack and pinion. Only concern would be if it's a diesel with a hydraboost brake system. If so braking could be questionable once hydraboost looses fluid. Otherwise, just drive it the 5 miles and hope the power steering pump stays good.

                              It's a gas truck.
