    Foundation repair question

Why would a foundation repair company not fill in the tunnels they dug under the house? (other than its hard work putting the dirt back) Is this a normal practice? I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to foundations but I feel like this could lead to more problems down the road?

Because you weren't there ? No, it certainly isn't a good practice, but depending on who did it, it might be normal for them. I had foundation work done by Olshan and had to ride them like a rented mule, eventually ran there sorry azzes off. Lots of companies ( in every field ) are just out to make a quick buck.

What was the foundation companies reason?

Future access if they need to do adjustments later.
Big tunnels they usually install a sump pump.

Had a pipe repaired under the foundation a couple years ago. They concreted the tunnel in.

That was my first thought. This work was done before we purchased the house and we were unaware of open tunnels under the house.

Have not been told the reason yet.

What is a sump pump? This seems like a large tunnel but I dont have anything to compare it to

Water will go and fill up the hole. A sump pump will pump water out if it does.

The dirt does no good even if they put it back it will never be compacted. Your house now sets on pilings not dirt

I would call before you filled them in. They may be back or if not you can have them come back to fill in.

Sump pumps under homes are no good either.

It can be filled with flow fill.

I'd rather have a sump pump than standing water.

                      I'm from up north.
As a kid growing up me and my siblings had our bedrooms in the basement.
                      It rained basement flooded.
Knocked a hole in he concrete floor dug a hole, put a perforated barrel in it surrounded it with pea stone. It LRLR our garden watered.

^^ standing water is no good either. A sump pump under the house is really not the answer. Fixing the drainage issues or open ditches is the answer.
