Why would a foundation repair company not fill in the tunnels they dug under the house? (other than its hard work putting the dirt back) Is this a normal practice? I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to foundations but I feel like this could lead to more problems down the road?

Because you weren't there ? No, it certainly isn't a good practice, but depending on who did it, it might be normal for them. I had foundation work done by Olshan and had to ride them like a rented mule, eventually ran there sorry azzes off. Lots of companies ( in every field ) are just out to make a quick buck.

I'd rather have a sump pump than standing water.
