Gander Outdoors new CEO criticizes company’s existing gun inventory

Gander Outdoors new top executive criticized the company’s former management last month for wasting $100 million on a bad assortment of guns — a mistake he promises to correct as the surviving stores move forward.

“I spent a day talking to a number of store managers and customers who have said that the current most recent management at Gander got really away from its core customer and really bet a $100 million on guns and was wrong,” said Gander Outdoors CEO Marcus Lemonis during a May 4 conference call with investors.

“I’d rather have 50 stores heavily curated for that local market than 150 stores that look like everything is the same, which is essentially what it was. Just a really ****ty inventory system is what they have … never seen something so stupid,” he continued.

Gander Mountain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protections in Minnesota court on March 10, indicating its intention to shutter 32 stores in 11 states and liquidate more than $500 million worth of assets.

Camping World, the nation’s largest recreational vehicle dealer, led the investor group that paid $38 million for Gander Mountain’s intellectual property, store leases and its Overtons boating business, during an April 28 auction. Lemonis said a separate liquidation company bought the store inventory currently on sale across the country.

In the days following the auction, Lemonis changed the company’s name to Gander Outdoors. He’s released the latest updates on store closures and changes for the brand via his Twitter account.

Lemonis said about 70 of the existing 162 Gander Mountain stores will remain operational, complete with more firearm selections at better prices.

“Well, we are going to have a selection of handguns and shotguns that we believe serve the need of the market and have margins that are commensurate with our expectations,” he told investors last month. “But I would expect that in those stores, we’re going to see an expansion of fishing, potentially getting back into the live bait business and really digging into what the consumer wanted.”

Still, Lemonis said his main priority remains the RV business as he blamed the collapse of Gander Mountain on “poor real estate transactions” and “undisciplined inventory buying.”

“Their largest shareholder was creating direction on inventory,” he said. “Not curated market by market. Not really understanding what sells in Michigan doesn’t necessarily sell in Jacksonville, Florida and really understanding that.”

He added, “Terrible, terrible inventory, terrible overhead, and candidly they didn’t need 160 stores.”

He sounds like he actually gets it. Maybe some of the closed/closing locations will re-open with "well curated inventory" for the local market.

Only been in 2 of their stores, but saw several ads. Their gun prices were higher than giraffe *****. I felt sexually assaulted just by looking at them!

I get what he is saying.....I remember walking into the GM here in Sugar Land when it first opened. They had a slew of awesome fishing lures......if I was going fishing for Muskie, Pike, or Lake Trout. I just shook my head and moved on. Not only was the pricing too high but the selection of gear didnt remotely match this market.

So maybe Gander Outdoors will have regular retail pricing... still doubtful though.

Most people associate gander with extremely inflated prices and an overall terrible store, always seemed like their locations looked like the walmart hunting and fishing section turned into a whole store.

Have you been to Field and Stream? Same exact lure selection. Lots of Musky lures. The fact of the matter is that the upper management of these chains are not outdoorsmen.

went into one over the weekend to see if I could luck into something on clearance. almost picked up a pair of pants, but then saw them online elsewhere cheaper than gander's clearance. would have bought some muzzleloader stuff, but they didn't have the right bullet weight or powder that I shoot. my daughter got a new pair of shoes out of the deal, they were within ~$5 of what we would have paid elsewhere.

I was worried by the title that the criticism may have had some "anti" overtones, but sounds like he just has a reasonable idea of how to make these stores worthwhile.

Yes if these stores had the ability to change the products they sell to the area they would do so much better. But alot of stores go with the same store idea because they get better deals buying for all their stores rather then smaller quantities for each store.

If they are as overpriced as Camping World is then they'll go under again.

I was going to type this exact same thing. ^^^^

I won't ever go to the store whether or not the new manager fixes it or not. I don't like it.

I would stop in there for sales only. Regular prices were way too high. Did like it when they had there live bait store. Use to swing by and get some minners. Good to hear they are revamping. To me Dicks is the same way. Bunch of junk in there no one wants.

Uh..... he said they "wasted money on a bad assortment of guns." What exactly were these "bad guns" they stocked? I mean, was it a bad caliber selection, or what?

I worked at Gander last year for the employee discounts. I was there for 3 months and ended up spending around $8k

Their used gun section was a huge joke. The people responsible for appraising used guns didn't know an M-16 from a F-16. I tried to show the errors of their ways and eventually they would wait until I came in or they would call me.

For example, we had a shipment of LEO Ar's are beat to heck going for $1k when 50 feet away, we had new AR's going for $650.
