Why are you TESTING THE WATER?????

What does that mean if you have something for sale then say you have something for sale, I don't know about you guys but this doesn't make any sense. Does everyone have to get on the same train

You either do or do not.

    There is no try.

It means that you might have something that you will part with "if" you get a good response to the item you are showing. If you don't then you keep it.

I'm right there with you on that one. Either it's for sale or it's not.

I've always thought that there should be no 'testing the water' threads allowed in the classifieds. I agree wholeheartedly that either the item is for sale or it is not.

Everything I own is for sale for a certain price... maybe I should throw out 'testing the water' classifieds on everything.

If you want to 'test the waters', go to an auction site and fish for high bidders.

Everything I have is for sale.... Its the price that determines if it gets sold. To me "testing the waters" means offer me enough and I'll let it go. But my guess is its a way of putting it for sale and if no one wants it @ said price you don't feel bad.

part that gets me the most is folks not posting an asking price for the item they are testing the waters with. making it seem more like fee bay than a classifieds section. if you are selling it, you know how much you want to get for it, so why try to keep it a secret, or start a bidding war?!?!

I know what it means, but all you are saying is that you might have something for sale if someone make an incredible offer on it or to see how many people will drool over it---- all I'm saying is get to the point and be original for crying out loud

Never liked the ads for sale where they say this bidding starts at $$$. I agree, put what you want and if you need to, lower the price.

That doesn't bother me as much as the ones who post links to their e-bay items in the classifieds. The classifieds is a market place where you attempt to sell something for a predetermined price not a auction barn.

I too believe our classifieds are here to sell stuff we want to get rid of or need to part with amongst "friends"...this is not a 100% anonymous bidding site like Ebay. I always tell friends and coworkers I know who are selling stuff..."if you want to make a good deal for someone and are just looking to unload some merchandise, sell it to me. If you're a looking to make a maximum profit or high dollar on something, look elsewhere". Does this make sense? I understand an item is worth what someone will pay for it, but I don't think that is always cool amongst friends. We're not here to take advantage of each other. IMHO.

I've wanted to "test the waters" a time or two. I tend to want more for my stuff than what people want to pay. I'm a "collector" with way too much stuff, but would rather hang on to some of it than feel like I'm throwing it away by selling it too cheap. Recently had a trailer on here for sale. Had a buyer lind up. Scheduled delivery and called when I was enroute. Didn't get an answer. Got a text the next day arrainging delivery on my way back through the town he lives in. Then got a call saying his wife shot down the deal. He apologized, and that's fine. If I had tested the waters, I might have found a buyer that was "ready" to take delivery.

Testing the waters means to me that somebody wants to sell something but unless they can get a good price for it they won't sell it. THis gets them by the "man of their word" in case they were to have priced it too low initially.

It could also mean they are opening it up for bid and the higher priced guy gets it.

                              Not a fan....
