    mahindra tractor RANT

so, I recently bought a Mahindra 2538 hydrostat trans tractor... brand new. had a small issue with it and the dealership came and picked it up, and returned it after fixing the next day. simple issue. Well, this weekend one of the hydraulic lines came loose... almost like it wasn't tightened from the factory. so I limp up to my sea container on my land, and call my buddy. he gets my owners manual and it calls for "API GL4 80W gear oil" for the transmission, and shows where to fill it. so, I had my buddy bring me 5 gallons of it, of which I needed about 2 gallons (it holds 8.2 full).

fast forward to today... I'm up at the dealer ordering a canopy for the trailer, and I happen to tell them what happened. they tell me I used the wrong fluid... like WAY wrong. I tell them the manual calls for exactly what I put in, and they deny it.... until they pull out a copy of the manual, and sure enough, I was correct. They claim it's a typo! now they're calling corporate to see what needs to be done.

basically, it's supposed to use universal trans/hydraulic fluid, and the GEAR DRIVEN trans model is supposed to used the gear oil. the manual I have is SPECIFICALLY FOR THE HST TRANSMISSION MODEL.

argh... I'm beyond annoyed right now. they claim "oh it will be fine" and "we can just drain it and refill it"... I don't know if I'm satisfied with that... I'm afraid I may have done some damage now after running it with the gear oil in the entire system!

Mahindra made in India? That's all I needed to know to avoid them. Sorry

assembled in india I believe. engines are made in south korea, and are the only small diesel tier 4 tractor engines that have NO emissions BS... no DEF and no REGEN. that's the main reason I went with Mahindra.

well, the one that came loose wasn't metric... it was standard... not sure if they are all that way...

looking for input on whether I should demand a new tractor (I literally have made 1 payment)... not bashing the brand please.

Hopefully some guys with mechanical skills can answer your original question.

I'd request them to flush it and replace the fluids. If they say it's not an issue. Great tractors.

I was talking about metric thread pitch....not wrench size.

I would just drain it, fill it with the correct fluid and not worry about it. If you had all 8.2 gallons of 80W in there then I might be a little concerned.

like said above, i would request a full flush with new filters and fluid.

On a unrelated note.....The company I work for has computer systems for farm implement dealers. The guy that once had the exclusive rights to import these tractors to the states was from India. Over there they often try to name their kids American name that they see on TV...anyway his name was Dippity Do Basu........

Agree. If it were going to be a big problem, you would probably already know it.
