Bottom of the 9th turkey hunt. Jr goes deep, twice!!!!!!!

Turkey had been a major nemesis for my young hunting buddy and we hadn't been able to close the deal in the fall or spring. He had baseball Saturday and we had to help around the house Saturday evening. That gave us one last shot Sunday for the last day of youth season!

    Jr catching.

On the mound. He has been playing pretty well.

We left Sunday am at 0430 and as usual my copilot didn't last long!

Sat in a blind for 2 hours and the birds moved our direction but hung up at about 150-200 yards across the creek. Come to find out they all we stuck on the hens and it would be running and gunning. We left the blind with just the 20 gauge and decided to make a play. Up until a couple weekends ago he was afraid of shotguns because of recoil. I got him over that and loaded up the montefeltro with some high brass 6's and we were off.

We found 5 gobblers in the creek with a lone hen. There was a field between us and the creek with just one 50 yard long strip of cedars. When the birds got behind it we made a mad dash for cover. We bury in the cedars and the birds are 50 yards or so past us. I mouth call and the hen comes to 3-4 yards before spooking. She moves down the creek and I keep calling gently. Eventually the biggest gobbler gets in front of jr and he hammers him at about 30 yards!

After a bunch of high fives we decided to make a loop around the ranch and look for animals. We glassed up another group of turkeys just before lunch in the brush just off the front field. Three hens with a big gobbler. I said let's give it a go and gave him the option on weapon. He grabbed the crossbow and I grabbed the shooting sticks. We snuck in to the brush and found the birds. That gobbler was very preoccupied to say the least! We got to a small opening and ran out of cover. I set up the sticks and ranged the Tom. 36 yards. I told jr to put the 30 yards mark right where the neck and body come together as the bird was facing straight away. It dropped in perfectly and bird two was down!

I'm pretty sure we could have filled all 4 tags but I told him two was enough and we were guests. We spent the rest of the day fishing and plinking with the family gift I picked up--17 HMR. I can't thank God enough for what I have been given and he sure has blessed me with a couple of great hunting partners! Lil doc and Jr are the loves of my life and it's been a blast!!!!!!

Had some fishing lessons as well. Taught him a little a lure and color selection. Fishing a top water. Sightfishing with a jig. Throwing a topwater. Even throwing a scum frog on top of the weeds!

                      Looking for targets.

                      Sight casting to bass!

                      First topwater fish!

                      Bonus

He lets me fish some! I tried to get him to try the fly rod, it's deadly out there. He was afraid he would mess it up. I'll get him there.

I think he had a great day and I wore him out!

Not a hunt but the wife and I are headed to south padre to fish and hang out in July. My next hunt is in California in august for blacktails. Late September I'm off to new Foundland for moose and caribou. After that the family adventures resume. Jr will be leaving in 2 weeks for the summer. He spends it with his dad. Gonna suck!
