My dog can climb a fence

Last week my neighbor brought my dog to my front door and I was so confused. I looked out the back door and my gsp puppy was still sitting there looking through the door. Went out in the back yard and looked around and couldn't figure where he got out. I've seen my dog clear a 4ft fence so I thought it was a possibility he couldve jumped but 6ft just seemed not likely.

Well Friday afternoon I came home from work and was paying with the dogs in the back yard. Then I noticed some birds flying to the tree in my neighbors yard and my dog started jumping at the fence to try and see them. That's when I realized he very couldve jumped over the fence. He jumps up grabs the middle brace and pushes himself up all in one motion where his head is above the fence. Still in the back of my mind I didn't think he could actually jump over.

Early Friday morning I was packing up to go fishing at the coast and I had just out the dogs in the back yard. When all of the sudden I notice my dog walking down the street. He jumped over! So I put a chain on him and left him there until I hot back early this morning. They've been in and out all day and haven't had any issues until just now. He jumped again and had gone down the street.

So with all that said, does anybody know of any jump shock collars or backyard containment systems they recommend?

I just can't get over the fact that my 45lb dog has learned to jump/climb a 6ft fence....

electric wire on top of fence.

My Malinois could jump up and climb over a 12 foot chain link fence when she was a year old. Saw it with my own eyes.

I can tell you this, once it starts, it won't stop until something changes.

        Electric fence.

Use some of the ribbon for horse fence, it is way more surface area than just a single hot wire.

My neighbors has had 3 pit bulls in the last 3 months. I have watched 2 of them climb the 4' chain link fence and one of them go over a 5' ranch gate. Across the street old neighbor had a blue heeled that would climb the fence and run around all day and the minute he was within a block of his house the dog would hear the chevy diesel coming and climb back into the back yard. I would suggest something leaning over the fence at an angle like those barb wire toppers but not barb wire.

I had to get rid of the best dog I've ever had because I couldn't keep her in the yard safely.

Yup..... had a dog that was impossible to keep him contained in the yard.

Hot wire, he will learn fast. Had to do this on my lab a few years back. I ran it inside the fence, even with the top bar. I got to watch the action, thru the kitchen window. I didn't know a dog could do a back flip, it was pretty impressive, but he never tried it again.

My lab can jump over my 6' privacy fence if she wanted to. She will jump up and put her back legs on the middle stringer and look over. I fixed this issue by installing a 3 strand electric fence on the inside of my fence. She touched it once and that was all it took, now she just runs along side the fence, but wont jump on it.

                      My dad's English pointer...

actually climbed the chain link fence. Then she would follow me to school and hang out until I got out. I found her on the playground one day as I was leaving school. My dad then put a 10 foot chain link fen in the back and she still got over it.

Those dogs are incredible jumpers! I saw one jump over the hood of a police cruiser and never touched metal lol.

OP..like has been said run a wire across the top. I had to do that for a GR that I had. I finally just put up an 8' wood privacy fence and have had no problems with my Lab.

OP is your fence a wooden privacy fence? If so I think you need to put a hot wire where the dog will touch it when he is grounded. I think if you put it around the top of a 6' fence the dog wouldn't be grounded when he touches it and wouldn't get shocked.

                            This^^^

Had same problem. Lab kept jumping fence so put a hot wire around top and bottom. Still did not phase him. Finally figured out he just cleared the bottom wire and when he hit the top wire he was no longer grounded this no shock. Never did come up with a solution, just had to lock him up when we were not home. ( He would only jump when we left the house.)

Have seen folks put PVC around top of fence. One 2" pipe inside of a larger diameter pipe. Dog trys to pull themselves up on pipe and it spins this falling back to the ground.

Maybe you could run a ground wire along the fence close to the hot wire so when he climbed up the top he couldn't help but touch both at the same time?
