    Boat Navigation

How many of you use anything other than a GPS/fish finder for navigation?

My Lowrance HDS 5 sonar has gone out, but the GPS still works fine. If I get a new unit with imaging, I'll most likely put it on the bow where I spend most of my time fishing. I can pull the current unit off the bow and put it in the console, but it doesn't have navigation.

Are there any good apps to download to a smart phone to use for navigational purposes?

    Thanks,
    Skooter

I think navionics has a phone app version, not sure though. I use my Lowrance unit with Navionics chips for navigation.

I use my iPhone with the the navionics app if I'm in a new area. No need for me to have a sonar. The app is well worth the $10.

You can get a cheap tablet and run the navionics map on it.

I'm sure somebody makes a mount for them.

Ok guys, I've been in IT for 20 years and fishing for double that and I recently acquired a boat ....man can these things be a money pit... especially when you like technology.Since an HDS 12 is out of my price range....I found a cost effective way to upgrade your navigation on your boat w...

SI is a waste on the TM IMO. It needs movement in a straight line to get a picture and changing directions all the time on the TM is just gonna give you lots of squiggly lines.

If you want to see up front look at HB 360

Thanks for the responses. I was looking at the Navionics app, but feedback is a great thing.

The unit is a 2009. Lowrance said gay they no longer repaired units.

Slew - can you provide more info?

That sucks. If you're getting a new one for up front why don't you just leave the 5 where it's at and ram mount the other one next to it. Or visa versa. Slew is right the si is much more useful at the console, I'd rather have gps up front (if I had to chose). And your going to need a considerably bigger screen ($) to see it at the bow

SI = side imaging?? I'm only looking at down imaging. Will that work on the troll motor?

Down imagining will work fine on the TM. So long as your not using the US2 plug from a Tm with the build in transducer. one of those are down imaging. You can add one though easy enough. I run side imaging and map on a split screen on the console and map and 2d sonar on the bow. Would like to add Hummingbird 360 on the bow of the next boat. Can see exactly where the brush is and where the fish are in the brush with that setup once you know what your looking at.
