Has anyone done/attempted to replace the pinion bearings on the differential

This is on a Dodge 1500 04 model. I am hearing a whining noise. I looked and noticed a little rear end grease coming from the front seal by the drive line. Is this tough job getting it back together and adjusting the slack?

You'll have to have $400+ of specialty tools to do it RIGHT. Better off having a shop do it. It'll be ~$150 in parts & probably ~$200 in labor.

Replace the seal first, may need a sleeve. Take off driveshaft.
      Mark pinion nut with scribe.
      Take off pinion nut.
      Pull yoke.
      Pull seal.
      Inspect yoke for groove.
      If groove, put on sleeve.
      Put in new seal.
      Put on yoke.
Tighten nut to exact same spot.
      Replace driveshaft.
Refill with oil and see if noise goes away.

If noise persists, replace pinion and carrier. If its anything like Chevy its not all that bad, but does take time to do it right, 8hr job first time, 3hrs the next. Impact helps tighten pinion nut on crush sleeve.

Did it once on my bronco, need to replace worn gears on my truck, and want to change rear gears on my mustang. Its not too hard, just take your time and make sure everything goes together right.
