*** - The House just passed a bill that affects overtime pay

    See for yourself.

Do you get paid for overtime work? The House of Representatives just passed a bill you may want to know about.

The measure, backed by Republicans, would let employers give workers paid time off instead of time-and-a-half pay the next time they put in extra hours.

The vote tally was largely along party lines, with no Democrats voting in favor of the bill. Six Republicans also voted against it.
G.O.P. leadership has touted the legislation, called the Working Families Flexibility Act, as an attempt to codify flexibility for employees.

"I don't think there's anything more powerful than giving them more control over their time so that they can make the best decisions for themselves and their families," Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington said Tuesday morning in a press conference held by Republican leaders in the House.

Do you get paid for overtime work? How would this bill affect you? Email Julia Horowitz and you might be featured in a CNNMoney article. The Trump administration also came out in support of the measure on Tuesday.

The White House said in a news release that the president's advisers would recommend Trump sign the bill into law if it was presented to him in its current form.

But Democrats stand in strong opposition. Their chief concern is that employers have the final say on when comp time can be used, which means bosses can defer compensating employees for overtime work.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts -- a Democrat who has made workers' protections her flagship cause and sits on the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions -- called the bill a "disgrace" on Twitter.

Interesting...I don't get OT but I see how my employer my giving out comp time that can be used in certain weeks of the month.

This reeks of potential lawsuits down the road...

Many employers don't roll over PTO year to year, and the majority of Americans don't use all their PTO, so giving employers the ability to pay out PTO instead of overtime is not something I'd wager most workers want. I sure as hell don't; 30% of my income is from overtime.

Now if they let the employee trade overtime hours for PTO at their discretion, that would be one thing. This ain't that.

I could see companies giving you the "paid time off" but then restricting when you could use it. I don't like this one bit.

Man if you do the time you need to get paid for it.... otherwise how would they correctly compensate you..... For every hour of overtime you put in, do you get 1.5 hours of "Off time" or do they label it vacation time? or do they only give you .5 hours, and pay you your normal hourly rate?

Yea, that's going to go over real well in the construction field.

Welcome to my world. Congress screwed us a few years back. I work ten hours a day straight pay for every hour.

Upon further review: there seems to be some fake news as to the article linked above. This link say employees will be given a choice. That would work for me. As it stands, I am "forced" to 10 hours and get paid straight time. Here is a different take on the bill...

H.R. 1180 amends the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to give private-sector employees the option of selecting compensatory time off in lieu of cash for overtime wages. An employee will …

Do wha? How/why is that? I know my industry (industrial construction) got hammered a few years back because of mis-classifying folks as salary when by rules they were hourly and had to pay back OT.

We get 1.5 for for every hour worked over 40hrs. For us it goes to flsa time not comp time or vacation time and you have 1 year to use the time from the day you earned it. After 1 yr they have to pay you for the overtime. The company I work for does not want to pay over time at all and encourages us to take our time off. I pretty much use flsa throughout the year instead of vacation time.

If the employee gets to pick which he/she gets I'm all for it. If it is required to take PTO that isn't worh the paper it is written on. I know of places that give Comp time at 2:1. 2 days worked to 1 day off. I will take the cash. The government should want us to take the money I would think.

Isn't FLSA the opposite of this, was created because of things like this & already in full affect since 1938?!?!?!?!

Not a fan. The way it reads leaves way too many ways to screw the worker. Say you don't use it and they have to pay you at the end of the year, all fine and great but some people depend on that money on their next check
