    2002 F350 towing. Help me silence a co-worker

I surf the green screen sometimes at work because I can get some good information here, and it's one of the few forum websites that isn't blocked by IT. Co-worker gives me a hard time for having this sight up, but now he needs advice and wants me to ask here. He said no more ridicule when he gets the information.

He has a 2002 Ford F-350 4x4 with the 7.3 diesel. He is looking at 5th wheel campers and found one he wanted, but the dry weight is 13,500# and from what he can find, his truck's tow capacity is 12,500#.
Has anyone with this truck, (I searched and see there are quite a few) ever towed anything this size and weight?

Load it like a freight train, drive it like a race car.

I used to drag 18k with my '00 Powerstroke pretty regularly. At the time it seemed like it pulled great.Trucks have changed quite a bit since then.

Maximum rating for a 5th wheel in that truck is 14,400

                https://www.fleet.ford.com/resources...s/2002_All.pdf

If the dry weight of the trailer is 13.5k, I would assume he would be well over that rating with actual trailer weight. He would also probably be over the 26k lb. CDL limit. This is the combined truck and trailer GROSS ratings, not actual weight. The truck has a GVWR of somewhere between 9-10k. If the trailer's GVWR is 16k(ish) or more, he would need a CDL.

If the trailer's GVWR is 13.5k, and not it's dry weight, he will be fine.

Towing a trailer over the ratings is both illegal and can be costly if involved in an accident. Insurance ain't gonna cover it if your overweight.

                EDIT:

Scratch that, the maximum 5th wheel rating is 13K.

If it can't be pulled with a 7.3 liter F350 it's too **** big to be on the road!

Using the link you provided, his truck is rated for 12,400. He won't be pulling it very often, and I wouldn't hesitate to pull it with that set up.

                      Thanks for the information.

How many miles on this 7.3? We have 430,000 on ours and it wouldn't make it out of the driveway with 13,000 lbs
