Has anyone ever had a dog with a torn ACL?

What are some of the things you have done? Did you go right to the $1500-$3000 surgery or other treatments?

Yeah my weim tore his ACL. One vet recommended surgery one did not. We went without the surgery. Runs just fine without any pain. Been two years now since he tore it.

Can't remember what he tore, but the little feller suffered with it, and since he's my youngest child, I went the surgical route.

Surgical route if your vet is confident in it. Used to work for a vet in college that was a pro at this surgery. Bigger/heavier dogs are more likely to need the surgery.

My mom has a Corgi that did it. Spent thousands on the surgery and a year or so later she tore it again. Now she has a slight limp
          Hasn't slowed her down any

My Chessie tore her right one and we had the surgery. She recovered nicely. Several years later I suspected she tore her left but just couldn't see going through that expense again (she was already 10). I kept her from doing any hard or long running, effectively retired her from the field. After about a year, all signs of a limp ceased. I still won't let her run hard but that doesn't stop her from duck hunting.

My sisters bull dog tore his and needed surgery. They had to put some kind of a plate in his. He's ok now.

I have had 2 mastiffs that both got ACL surgery. The boy tore both his rear leg ACLs and surgery on both. My girl has one leg done. Its expensive but worth it to me. Neither could walk well with them torn. After recovering, they both were back to running.

My Catahoula tore hers, vet said kennel her for two weeks then she's good to go. Been a few months now, and she's just as crazy as before.

Yep. My chessie, Sally (RIP), tore hers because I ignorantly let her chase a frisbee. You know, you throw it, they run after it and jump up into the air and catch it, coming down on their hind legs. My dog's surgeon said 90% of the ACL tears he sees are from chasing frisbees. Understandably, he hates the **** things and wishes they'd never been invented.

She was in a cage for 2 weeks healing, then a short leash for several weeks after that. Recovery was very slow, and took several months and she never was the same. Further, suddenly going from a super-athletic dog to a caged invalid screwed up her health so she became diabetic and required insulin testing twice a day, all kinds of things. Even now, every time I see a frisbee, I wince and remember her.

My weim tore his when he was 9 months old. He had surgery. Cost me $4800 after follow ups and meds.

This was when he was coming out of the anesthesia lol

My dog tore his hunting his second season. It was repaired. Did all the doggy PT both formal and at home. Nothing off the lead for three months. The very first day I take him off lead he runs and tears the other. I knew exactly what it was. Had surgery two weeks later. Did all the rehab again. Never had another issue. he has hunted 2-3x every week during duck season until this last year. He's now 12. Would do it all again tomorrow. Money well spent in his case. It's his shoulders and hips that limit him now.
Once they tear one they at high risk of tearing the other. To be honest I'm glad it happened and got it out of the way. One duck season altered from injury was enough.

Our dog tore his in 2015. Our regular vet recommended surgery but a friend of a friend is a vet and he didn't recommend it after seeing our dog. Our dog is a corgi/pug/who knows what else mix. We rested him for a few weeks (no chasing, hard playing, etc) and then he has been fine ever since.

Abby tore hers at 9 at the end of dove season....Doc said $3-4K or retire her and let her live the life of luxury. She had a **** good spolied 3 years after that with a slight limp. Sure miss that girl.
