What are some of the things you have done? Did you go right to the $1500-$3000 surgery or other treatments?

My Chessie tore her right one and we had the surgery. She recovered nicely. Several years later I suspected she tore her left but just couldn't see going through that expense again (she was already 10). I kept her from doing any hard or long running, effectively retired her from the field. After about a year, all signs of a limp ceased. I still won't let her run hard but that doesn't stop her from duck hunting.

Yep. My chessie, Sally (RIP), tore hers because I ignorantly let her chase a frisbee. You know, you throw it, they run after it and jump up into the air and catch it, coming down on their hind legs. My dog's surgeon said 90% of the ACL tears he sees are from chasing frisbees. Understandably, he hates the **** things and wishes they'd never been invented.
She was in a cage for 2 weeks healing, then a short leash for several weeks after that. Recovery was very slow, and took several months and she never was the same. Further, suddenly going from a super-athletic dog to a caged invalid screwed up her health so she became diabetic and required insulin testing twice a day, all kinds of things. Even now, every time I see a frisbee, I wince and remember her.

My dog tore his hunting his second season. It was repaired. Did all the doggy PT both formal and at home. Nothing off the lead for three months. The very first day I take him off lead he runs and tears the other. I knew exactly what it was. Had surgery two weeks later. Did all the rehab again. Never had another issue. he has hunted 2-3x every week during duck season until this last year. He's now 12. Would do it all again tomorrow. Money well spent in his case. It's his shoulders and hips that limit him now.
Once they tear one they at high risk of tearing the other. To be honest I'm glad it happened and got it out of the way. One duck season altered from injury was enough.

Our dog tore his in 2015. Our regular vet recommended surgery but a friend of a friend is a vet and he didn't recommend it after seeing our dog. Our dog is a corgi/pug/who knows what else mix. We rested him for a few weeks (no chasing, hard playing, etc) and then he has been fine ever since.
