Working as a biologist we did a of controlled burning. I remember several times where someone calls over the radio...BEES!. Almost always it was a dozer operator cutting firebreaks and busts up a stump or log and the dozer becomes swarmed with the bees.

I always suit up in my back yard when mowing and edging around my hives but admittedly they've always been calm when I mow or weed eat and luckily have never had any issues. Every hive is different but I will say that they were probably a bit pissy with the little cold snap that just moved through.

My MIL was mowing the ditch in front of her house about 10 miles outside Stephenville. She got stung over 100 times before she got away. Neighbor had an epi pen and they gave it to her and waited for ambulance. If neighbor hadn't had that pen it would have been lights out probably. And she's not allergic to them but that many stings on your head and face will do it. She even had them in her mouth.
They had a bee keeper come out and he couldn't find a nest/hive anywhere in the area. She hasn't mowed that ditch since.

I know some laugh, but bee stings for some are deadly! I got hit on the ear at our Robert Lee lease last fall and finally had to go to my doctor. My ear was 3 times bigger than the other. He prescribed Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream that stopped the itching/allergic reaction but it still took 4 days to return to normal. Much to my surprise he also wrote a script for the EpiPen 2 pack. I've never had a reaction like that but it was enough he said I should be prepared. So, one in my truck and always with me and another at home.
We had a rancher about 6 years ago in Granbury that was moving a old pile of dead trees and was attached by bees, confirmed some say as African species. His tractor was enclose but they still got in. He jumped out trying to escape and ended up with a open fracture of his lower leg. Deputies who responded stated he had the dam things even stinging the leg wound. As I remember there were also one or two Deputies stung as well. All survived but wow!
So, I know we need these critters but I HATE 'EM too!

I was on a tractor moving round bales, and there was a nest of the big bumble bees under one. They started stinging and I jumped off the tractor and ran. Unfortunately, I left the tractor in gear and it was running across the pasture with bees following it. I then had to chase the tractor down and get it stopped before it ran through a fence. I got stung 3 more times while trying to get back on the tractor without it running me over too! I hate those big bees!!!!
