Another Cruise Thread / Question

Hello GS,
The wife and I are taking a Carnival cruise out of New Orleans next week. This was kinda of a last minute throw down thing as we have never been on a cruise and wanted to take a break and relax. We have no real big expectations.

I got to looking at the stops and our first stop is Progreso Yucatan. I personally never heard of it and just wanted to know if anyone has been there and if there is a good excursion to go on. Looks like I have beach options and Mayan ruin tours.

Any advice would be appreciated.

That's more of the drinkers tour, just stay with the cruise crowd and you'll be ok. The excursions are all the same.

We didn't do excursions in Progreso. We heard the ones that were offered weren't worth it. Don't know if true, just what we were told. We just took the bus from the ship to the drop of point right in town and spent our day there. Plenty of shopping(stores will give you free tequila shots ) and the beach is right there. Now the beach in Progreso is like Galveston. But all the restaurants on the main road along the beach have service at the beach. If you do end up on the beach go the restaurant called Tommy's. Top notch service and it was good and cheap. We had 2 buckets of beer, my wife had a few pina coladas, an appetizer and it was only $20...oh and the give you free tequila shot too

Not much to do there but we have done the ALL INCLUSIVE BEACH RESORT GETAWAY(carnival web site) a couple times and doing it again this year. Its a pretty safe bet and has always been fun.

Just be careful going to the bathroom. My buddy had a guy offering to hold it for him at Progresso.

You can get some nice- quality and cheap Oakley knockoff sunglasses in Progresso at the bus drop-off. - I wish I would have bought more when we were there. You can talk the hut vendors down on price, they all had them. I used them for riding 4wlrs and what not and they lasted a good while before getting scratched up.
I tried buying more at the next stop and they wouldn't budge on price compared to Progresso. (I'm talking $15-20 a pair and "look" authentic)

We did some sort of Myan Ruin Excursion out of Progresso because I wanted my son to see some as the wife and I had done previously in Playa.
It was ok, but personally I'd just go with what Jaybo31 suggested.

Progresso is kinds lackluster as a port of call, so just see it as a short stop and don't expect too much out of it.

Went on our first cruise last year never again not for me or the wife. Ended up catching some kinda flue or virus neither get sea sick after day 3 started feeling better so that was a good thing LOL! I'm just not a cruise guy I think it's a waste of money b/c you are only at the ports for few hours and then it's back on the ship. I also noticed that when you really watch the buffet tables are nasty there are hundreds of hands all over the food and coughing all over it just disgusting thing ever so we started going to serve lines. I know people love these cruises but not me I'm done good luck!
