Last year I sold one of my calves to a friend. I drove my truck and trailer to the local grain mill, weighed it, then went home (8 miles) got the calf, weighed again and did the math to get a weight. Last year it seemed accurate so we didn't question it and I dropped him off a the processor a few days later.
I did the same thing today and it said my yearling bull calf weighed 1100lbs. I really can't believe he's that heavy. Maybe 900 but 1100 seems ludicrous. He's nothing special, mom is a nice Angus and dad was an Angus crossed with something.
Is there a formula for figuring live weight out of hanging weight based on a percentage? I usually charge the folks based on live weight and I don't want to take advantage of them in any way.... I told them I thought the weight seemed too heavy and we'd look at the hanging weight and see how much discrepancy there is before a price is agreed upon.
