Some of you folks are getting your addition and subtraction mixed up.

I truly hope some on here are just messing with us.

Room cost + tip = total cost
$25 + $2 = 27
divided by number of occupants equal $9

As other have pointed out, the riddle is all about misdirection. Keep track of how much the total outlay is. Initially it was $30. Then they got $3 back so the new outlay became $27.

Correct answer. It's amazing how many people this riddle has confused thru the years.

How much money did we start with..$30 bucks!

So there's $30 bucks in the kitty...$3 back to the dudes, $2 to the bell hop, $25 to the hotel.....25+3+2 is still 30. 30-3-2 is still 25. It's just math.

Ol boys have 8.333333cont each, in the room (25/3)+1 they got back=9.333333cont (each)....X3=28+2=30. The wording makes it hard to see the dollar that got split into 1/3s.
