Ours died tonight after 4+ years. What brands and models would one recommend for home use (mostly recipe print outs and homework for two kids) kind of use?

If you don't need color, I recommend Brother. I have an MFC-7860DW. It is a laser printer, scanner, and fax machine. I use mine all of the time for all three functions. It is thrifty with the toner, fairly fast as a scanner (even at higher resolutions), and a speedy printer with a decent duplex mode.
It has been recently replaced by the MFC-L2740DW, which has even better duplex printing. We print to it from our tablets, phones, and laptops all of the time without any issue.

Buy any brand printer from Costco. Printers are under their no time limit 100% satisfaction guarantee. Printers have rubber band belts and plastic gears in them and lots can go wrong. I returned an HP because it was wasting huge amounts of ink doing self tests every time I woke it up to use it. Costco refunded me the purchase price, plus the recent purchase of a super combo ink pack that I bought a few weeks prior.
I bought a Cannon and it is great. I bought a similar Cannon for my office. Buying ink for any brand is pure robbery. Pick your poison.

I run a printer hard since I move it in and out of hotels, my rv and my truck.
It gets dropped, kicked, drinks spilled on it, pushed off the table, you name it....I've tried to break them.
I own three of the Brother 2305 models....under a hundred bucks each, and they will put out the pages. Toner is cheap off amazon...
