You can also look for a food pantry in you area.

We have a food pantry here in Mt Vernon that mine and another church built a few years ago. I shoot a hog ever now and then and have it butchered at the locker plant and then give it to the food panty. The guy at the locker plant only charges me $25.00 to package it. The food pantry hands out can goods, dry beans, ect. The only meat most of these folks get is from the meat given to them from the pantry. Some of the folks that come for the free hand outs are some of the biggest crackheads in town and it drives me crazy to see them coming up there to get free hand outs instead of working for it. The good thing is you have to feed the trash to get to the kids. The kids of these people cant help the situation their sorry folks put them in.

BTW you should smell the pork grillin in the projects on a Sunday afternoon after you have made a donation.

One thing tht should also be mentioned at tax time is tht this is a TAX DEDUCTION for those that itemize. I'm not an accountant, but I'm pretty sure you can deduct the fair market value of the pork (i.e. 50 lbs of pork at $2 per pound = $100) plus the charitable mileage to take it to the food pantry. Now I don't know if this includes the 300 miles to the lease (ask your accountant), but even at $100 for the pig and say another $20 for mileage this will save you enough off of your income tax to buy a nice dinner for the hunters.

So who else is pledging a pig?

I passed around a form at the LSBA EC meeting yesterday asking people for a "Pig Pledge" for this cause. I'll start a separate thread for people to sign up other pledgers when I get back to Rockport tonight, but I am proud to report that 9 members at the meeting pledged to harvest something like

          1011.5 Hogs!

Now I'm not really sure that Brad (Biggen) Adams really pledged 1,000 pigs. Is he really that confident? Boy is he going to be busy. Do you think that maybe other guys kept adding zeroes to his total?

Even without that 1000 though we're off to a good start.

Tomme, Dena said something about a hog hunt around the Houston area. Do you know anything abut that? A LSBA Group hunt for this cause would be great.

Let me know and I'll try to come.

Ronnie I'll have to let Dena speak on that, but yes we are trying to get one set up there. I believe this is in an area where the people hunting will have to be IBEP certified (landowner requirement) and not a done deal yet, but will keep you posted.

OK we're trying to get serious here. I'm bringing this thread to the top because it has the drop off locations.

I also started a thread called Pledge a Pig! Which goes along with this thread. You ought to go over there and check out what has already been pledged just by the folks at the EC meeting last weekend. That Biggen is DA MAN (check it out) and he's sure going to be hard to beat.

how cool would it be if the area reps secured spots for this program. that way the ENTIRE state would have opporotunities to pitch in locally, and just look at the GREAT pub this would be for the LSBA and bowhunting!! hope everyone gets to help out!!

Ronnie this lady is a coordinator for Hunters Harvest. Maybe she could help you out in that area.

If that doesn't work you might try calling churches or organizations in your area that work with the poor such as the St. Vincent DePaul society or the Salvation Army. I would assume that Texarkana has a shelter of some sort and might have a soup kitchen that would accept donations. If that doesn't work, maybe you could get a TBH express going to San Antonio or Houston. You might have to quarter them and put them on ice, but it would be for a good cause.

Bowhuntn, if you're in Denton you might contact Steve Whittington. He's your regional rep. You're right though I hope we can do this every year and maybe have a pig trophy for the region that produces the most pork.
