Is it legal to 'telephone' a private tank in order to get a general idea of what is in there? Also, does it kill the fish or just stun them? Really wanting to get an idea of what is inhabiting the 2 tanks on our lease without causing any permanent damage. So far they seem pretty lifeless other than a few turtles and an occasional duck.

You might call around. Here is one place: http://www.texaspondmanagement.com/e...ices-texas.php
Professional electrofishing stuff is expensive equipment. I assume you are talking about using a boat.
I've carried backpack '*******s' many miles up and down trout streams in WV and WA doing trout research in the past. Backpack units have a small radius and would've work in a pond big enough to hold fish, only narrow fast-moving water.Last edited by Mountaineer; 03-30-2017, 08:44 PM. Chris, if your able to get around the tanks fairly well then running a seine will work. You just need a few guys to help you. You would need an old crank up phone that generates current to shock the tank. It will also kill several of the fish. Try throwing some floating fish food out there and see if anything comes up to feed

Shocking a Tank
I watched an episode of bizarre foods just last night where he was put with some biologist and they were putting just enough current in the water to stun fish and net up the invasive Asian carp. It did not kill.
So the equipment is out there. I bet with enough google time you could figure out the right numbers and southern engineer something[emoji14]
