What does it cost to move a cubic yard of dirt?

Thinking of expanding a pond and was wondering what would be a good estimate to move 4 to 5000 yards of dirt. Current pond holds water and soil is capable of sealing and holding water. I thought the rule of thumb was a buck per yard. Is that still valid?

This is not buying it just moving it out of the ground and building a dam. Thanks for the reply though

Find someone close that needs the dirt and let them pay to move it

If it's good topsoil or dirt look for a landscaping company in the area. They might buy it from you and also dig it...

The last I was quoted was 75 cents a yard.

I'm in the Aspermont area and local contractors are right around $2-$2.50/cubic yard. Therefore our average pond of that size will cost you around $10,000.

Great numbers guys. Keep them coming. I don't want selling the dirt is a good idea but not something I want to get into

Where is this dirt located? I just built a gentlemen a 5ac fishing lake and moved about 50000 yards of dirt out of it to a local jobsite. I needed dirt and he needed a lake. It was a great deal for everyone. He saved a pile of money and so did I. If it's good select fill, or has enough clay to be mixed with sand to get select fill, there could be a market for it.
