Making Changes to a Bolt Rifle?

I inherited an old Savage 110 7mm Mag from my dad. I like the gun but it kicks more than my liking and dont want it to sit in the safe because i doubt i'll ever use it in its current state. The rifle barrel was already magnaported back around '95 when we lived in Arizona. I thought about changing the stock to something a little better design to absorb some of the shock. What would be a good fit for this gun?

The old stock is in great shape and untarnished. I thought about building a medium caliber gun from it, maybe a nice 6.5 or 7mm-08. What should i pay special attention to in these processes?

Wooden stock, I assume? You might look around at how folks have added weight to their stocks, helps with recoil.
Also check out the recoil pad that's on it, might could stand to be updated/replaced. ???

Something I have heard of recently is adding mecury tubes (I believe) to the stock to absorb recoil. Wife's grandpa has a 30-378 and added two. Says you can hardly feel the recoil. No idea on cost or if you can even do it to a wood stock. But a gunsmith should be able to answer both of those questions.

Hardly feel the recoil on a 30-378 huh? I would definitely be impressed with that result

Check the gun fit and add a new recoil pad would be my first two suggestions.

Rebarreling a Savage is pretty easy. You can do it yourself if you want, but many places will do the rebarrel them for as little as $40 labor. Be sure to match the bolthead to what you want to rebarrel to. A 7mm Rem Mag has a .532" bolt head. The calibers you are discussing are .473".

            Correct,
It is an old HEAVY wood stock. Its heavier than any other rifle i have and still kicks pretty ridiculous. More so than my .300 Win.
It does not have much contour to it, so its pretty straight forward and puts all of the recoil straight back into my shoulder. I planned on getting a different recoil pad for it but figured that would be minimal. So i decided to replace the stock with an updated model, maybe something that would help dissipate the felt recoil.

Once that was done, i then want to take the old stock and build another rifle from it like a 7mm-08 or 6.5 creedmore. Just wasnt sure about if aftermarket stocks take a specified action/bolt? And will a Savage Stock fit other brand parts?

Low recoil ammo is an option. It may be worth trying if you wanna keep your daddy's gun the way he gave it to you.

                I pondered this as well,
but figured it would negate the fact of even using a Magnum in the first place.

I might just keep it like it is and just suck it up. Couple rounds a year on the bench and couple at critters wont kill me i guess

I own a Ruger 7mag w/ the skeleton stock which kicked like a mule. Last year I added a muzzle break and it made a tremendous difference, and the gun is now a pleasure to shoot.

You might want to looks at a Boyd's straight line thumbhole stock. The one I put on my Savage 7mmWSM seems to absorb quit a lot of felt recoil.

Would a machinist have to shorten my barrel some past the ports to thread it for a muzzle break? It already has 12 holes drilled at certain angles at the end. Had it magnaported several years ago. Believe it or not, its better than it used to be, lol

Trim a little off the stock and add the best pachmayr pad. My 7 kicks like a .243 now.
Shoot 150's instead of heavier loads. Federal.

Magna porting is not as good IMO as a muzzlebrake for reducing recoil. Either one may change the barrel harmonics and require scope adjustment to get her back on target. Savage has some really good and accurate barrels so if it's a tack driver I would leave it alone. Limbsaver makes an excellent recoil pad. http://www.chuckhawks.com/sims_limbs...ecoil_pads.htm

I put a soft Hogue stock on my Weatherby 7mm Mag because of the recoil.
Took the sting right out of it.
