I went to grade school with a girl whose grandmother went to THAT school at THAT time. Her grandmother skipped school that day, the only day of school she ever skipped. That explosion is the reason that particular gas (can't remember if it was propane or natural gas) now has an odor added to it.

Natural gas is odorless, but since that explosion they require an odorant to be introduce to the gas. That fateful day, gas had accumulated and filled the space beneath the first floor, unknown to anyone. A switch of a switch created the spark that ignited the explosion.

I live about 20 miles north and have friends and clients from New London. we were reminded of the tragedy as kids every time we went there to compete since they were in our district. There is a prominent monument in the circle in the middle of the highway in front of the school.

Gas ain't no joke. In 2006 my aunts house filled up with gas and blew up in Missouri City while she was sleeping. Blew 2x4s through houses down the road
