Building a lake in a flood zone

I went and looked at some property this past week and the back of the property is in a flood zone a. I was thinking if I built a good size lake, 10 ac+, would this have any effect on flooding or at least slow it down?

It seems valid. That's why they build retention ponds in neighborhoods these days. You would have to be able to discharge water out of the pond though.

The question is more of are you trying to make a retention or detention pond it will have a different effect on flooding has one drains in refills and the other one stays full with some extra surcharge capacity. It will help slow down water but it depends on what you're trying to keep from flooding too it's effect

It shouldn't be a problem but check with the local flood plain administrator (city or county). They should be able to help with any FEMA applications that may be required.

Enter your address or city in the search menu. Find what map you need and view it.

The sellers disclosure showed me and the website had it also. I think if you look at the county tax map it will show it, not 100% on the cad map.

Just watch out...if it gets some decent water going through there, it could also wash out your pond

That's something I never thought of.

There's an all season creek running through the area.

For sure you need to be in contact with the Feds before you start messing with "their" wetlands.

You better make sure someone down stream isn't counting on that water for livestock or recreation.

Is there an actual statute on this?

I would start by contacting the Natural Resource Conservation Service.

If the pond is next to a creek its not going to help with stopping flood waters making their way to the front of the property. But if you dug a pond and built a levee with the dirt to divert flood waters, maybe so.

For flood control you might try building an elevated road with ditches on both sides around the perimeter.
