    What the crappie :D

This pond is almost 20 yrs old, we have never stocked crappie out of concern of them over populating and stunting bass growth......

And then I get this pic of my son, who is spending spring break with his Nana & Papaw

They boated 8 crappie in a couple of hours and a 2.5 lb bass

I assume the crappie either came from up stream, or the birds brought in eggs. But they all seem to be about 10", so I'm guessing our neighbor is wondering where his crappie are

Good stuff ! My late grandfather stocked ponds he dug himself 40+ years ago with channel cat only. On any given day, I can catch a few bass and crappie. I assume birds eating eggs and pooping [emoji106]

I drank a 12pk and dug a large water hole in my backyard one night smack dab in the middle of the city....and 1.5 years later was catching perch out of it with a rod and reel. Birds was my guess.

Probably eggs getting washed downstream in a big rain and settling in the next pond. Same thing happened at my place.

Haha- well it's all boots. I bought them big, admittedly too big, so we wouldn't have to buy an $80 pair of boots EVERY year. 2 pair of socks and he is good to go

I'm not sure how fish get into a pond that has never been stocked but they do every single time. My guess is eggs are brought in by wading birds or ducks either on their feet or stuck to their feathers.

Pretty sure mine was populated by this egret that would frequent the hole.

Congrats to the young man! Those will be good memories.

I have a dumb question (I am not a fisherman.) The quote above confuses me. I thought or assumed that the bass would eat the crappie and it would be good for the bass population, so they did not cannibalize their own young.

I did not know the two species were resource competitors. Did I miss something? I ask b/c I just bought a place with two stock ponds, probably too small for bass. But thought about stocking with both so the kids had something to do while in the country. Do they not do well together?
