My reply was sufficiently smart arse that he got very red in the face and asked me to leave.
him: "I don't have a pen."

having interviewed thousands of people my questions vary over the years. the one question I always as is what are your 3 areas of opportunity (weakness) in regards to the job? This will shed light on self awareness, coach ability, and general BS factor. When they answer I have none then it's a pass.

"Tell me all you know about our company." I love it when someone knows the details of some of our projects, knows about our clients, knows about awards or accolades that we've received. If they haven't taken the time to do a little research, they probably don't want the job that bad.
I had an interview the other day where the applicant asked me, "What exactly is it y'all do?". We make edible urinal cakes and we're looking for a QC tester.

For these generic questions I ask a candidate what in their opinion is the single most important event taking place in the world today. I really don't care about their answer but want to find out if they have any situational awareness of what is going on today. Another question I ask is to have them describe their last boss. If they talk trash about the last boss, they will probably talk trash about you. These questions reflect little on the actual job but speak volumes regarding the individual candidate.
