Applying for out of state drawings.

I am looking to start building points in both CO and NM. I think we are getting close to the deadlines. Problem is, I dont have a clue what Im doing here. What units should I be applying for, how the process works, nothing. I have never participated in a drawing outside of Texas, nor do I know of anyone close who has that I can ask.

I dont even have anyone to apply with lol. All of my good friends are rifle hunters, and the few that bow hunt arent interested in hunting out of state. But I am determined to go!

Anyone knowledgeable and have some time to give me a run down of how this all works? Sorry to be dumb with this, Im just not finding much in my research.

NM doesn't have points, but you should definitely apply there for at least Elk..

      I'll shoot you a PM

NM doesn't have PP so be ready to hunt the year you draw. Also be ready to not hunt for the next few years or more

Gohunt.com has a ton of great info and if you're serious about western hunts and how to best work draws and odds it's worth the investment

If you just want to put in for PP in Colorado you can. There is a PP only selection. You still have to pay for the tag up front, but they refund your money (minus some fees, fees are higher if you did not hold a Colorado hunting or fishing license last year) a while later.

You can also put in for PP and buy an OTC elk tag for much of Colorado. I would suggest doing that if you want to hunt this year. I can't imagine the units that take 0 points to draw are any better than OTC units, and you get to start building points. In the CPW Big game booklet there are maps that list which units have OTC tags available for each season. Most OTC tags are archery, 2nd rifle, or 3rd rifle. There are no OTC tags for deer, but some units you can draw with 0 points.

I second this. The information they provide is all on the CPW website, but they make it MUCH easier to navigate and also publish odds, unit date, trophy class per unit, etc. Great resource

I second what JJustin says. If you just want points in CO do a pp only selection and do DIY over the counter archery.
