Might be time for a new computer

I don't WANT a new computer. My 2009 iMac 27" has been awesome. But I'm having some problems. Main ones being:

    1) Ethernet cable connection no longer works. I've checked the cable, modem, etc... and even brought another computer to this desk - everything works. It's the computer, not a cable or the modem. I have Wifi connectivity to the internet. But for how long? I don't know.

    2) Mouse click function just stops working about once a day. You can still move it around the screen. It just won't click on anything until you reboot the system (hard reset with the on/off button - it's the only way I can reset it without the mouse click function)

So... I've reloaded the OS, reset NVRAM and PRAM, talked to Apple techs, etc... It just seems like my ol' machine is on it's way out. I can't get hardware diagnostic to run for some reason. I gave up on trying.

So now I'm thinking of a new machine. Mac or PC. Hmmm.... I know this - my iMac was WAY more computer than I needed... and I LIKED that. I didn't have to "want" for speed or memory with this one. It's STILL faster than my brand new work PC. So I'm leaning heavily towards a direct one-for-one swap for a new iMac 27". Looking at about $2K out the door.

    Or...

A PC. What kind? I don't know. I swore them off about 8 years ago because I was so frustrated with them. It seems they all run so SLOW. Customer service sucked big time (Which is something I have NOT experienced with Mac).

    What I do:
    1) Surf the web
    2) Work on PowerPoint, Excel, and Word
    3) Save some files. Mostly the ones in #2 above. Some pictures. Some music. Not many. But some. 1TB of storage is plenty for me. I'll probably never fill 1/4 of it.
    4) UPLOAD large files to a database. This is where I need the speed. I am currently paying for Gigabit service, but I'm not getting anywhere near the speed I want or need for uploading files. Wired... My iMac would upload a file in no time. Wifi... I have to go make a sandwich, get a drink, etc... and it's still uploading. If I have several to upload, it may be an hour or more.
    5) Use two areas side by side on my 27" screen (Safari on the left, Email on the right)
    6) Type long posts onto TBH.

Thoughts one way or another? Mac or PC? If PC, what brand, and if you have a model in mind, which one? I am NOT a gamer, and I don't do a lot of graphics work - but would like the ability to if I want to (graphics, not games).

    All the best,
    Glenn

I just bought a new laptop as my old (15 years) pc cannot get on some websites because there is no update for my OS version of explorer. All I can say is whoever dreamed up Windows 10 should be tarred and feathered.

Just get another iMac, Glenn. Look how well the last one served you.

By the way... I think my iMac is reading my posts. It hasn't acted up all afternoon.

Why not box it up and ship it in for repairs?

I have a 2012 air that I got a good deal on and was the sole reason I bought it.

I never turn it off and use it daily for the last 5 years. I'll be ponying up for another Mac when this one goes caput

I don't know if it would be worth it. They don't offer the flat-rate repair on a machine this old. And I couldn't find out how much it would be until I shipped it out for repair.

Have you taken it to the Apple Store to have them diagnose it?

Macbook Pro and two separate monitors. I recently switched to Mac less than a year ago and can't see myself going back. Screaming fast internet over wifi. As much as 350gbps...

Dual 26" screens and it's a match made in heaven. Not to mention it's mobile when I need it to be.

Not yet. That may be the next step before a new one.

Does the MacBook Pro come with an ethernet connection? I heard rumor they stopped putting the port on them and they are straight wifi, but I haven't confirmed that. This is why I want to hard-wire mine via ethernet cable. These were my speeds prior to losing it:

I just realized you wrote gbps. Is that right, or did you mean mbps? I don't even know a service provider that offers that speed!
