MLD Changes.... what option are you choosing?

Looking at the two options and not sure which one to chose , Harvest Option or Conservation Option. On the Harvest option how are the tags determined? The Conservation Option is a lot more work for sure.

Not sure how tags will be issued. I would think it would still be based on deer counts or spotlight surveys

What I understand is that the conservation is more in line with the old MLD 3. I also understand that feeding protein has been taken off the list. I think that is so land owners pay more attention to the natural forage over just feeding the animals. I'm still gathering the information myself.

If you are currently on MLD 3 and are up to date on your harvest recording and management practices you will automatically be enrolled in the Conservation option which I will be.
In case you did not know the harvesting of deer is considered a management practice. Also new this year you will have to print out your own tags, the state will no longer be providing them.

they are also doing away with the LAMPs program

we are on LAMPS and supposedly LAMPS has gone digital and we will need to go to their new website, find our property and trace the boundary lines. They will then give us tags like they have in the past and just hunt off of those. I'm guessing if they don't give us enough we just hunt off of our own tags.

I'm fairly certain that with the harvest option tags will be issued based off of the average deer density for the area. Not sure if that is by county, region, or what. There won't be any surveys required for that option. The conservation option will mimic the current MLD system.

What I have been told if you are MLD 2 you might want to move up to 3 Which will be the conservation route. We are in the same boat on one ranch as we are bow hunting only. We didn't need to go 3. However under the new regulations you can customize your harvest more than if you are in the Harvest category. I believe they look at your area and just give you a have at number.
