Texas Approves Use of Controversial Pesticide to Combat Feral Hogs

Has anyone heard about this. I can see both sides on this. Not sure which way I'm leaning. I understand that we are loosing the battle with the hogs but I enjoy hunting them.

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller approved the use of a controversial feral hog poison in order to reduce the state's booming population of pigs.

I don't think anyone pays attention here anymore. First the Remington recall from 1876 and now this.

The way I understand is a landowner would have to pay a licensed applicator to put the poison out on private property right?

Yes only legal if used by a licensed applicator. There are special feeders that only hogs can eat out of. Yes im late to the party as well. Had to do some research on this before posting. I see this as one tool that can be used. I think mainly farmers will benefit from it. Most Ranchers will probably not mess with this stuff. Its estimated that hogs destroy 200 million in crops every year. That impacts farmers pocket books and the economy. If they want to use a pesticide to kill them off, more power to them. That being said, from what I have read, the dose is very low. Swine are susceptible to low levels of Warfin, that will not hurt most other native wildlife. Here's to hoping they are right.

As I have grown older I am starting to realize the damage that chemicals in agriculture have done and I avoid chemicals on my property. I prefer the "mechanical" means of control (broadhead or bullet). By the way, I got a BS and MA in agriculture a long time ago. The focus was entirely on more producing more pounds of whatever using whatever miracle chemicals were available.
Farming practices have changed the wildlife population drastically.

They destroy $200 million. How much do they plant in total though? For example, if the overall crop is worth $100 billion, $200 million is just a drop in the bucket. Not to mention, what is the value of crops damaged by weather every year?

My $100 billion is just made up, but the $200 million needs to be put into context.

I've got two thinking's on this.

First, I don't see how it wouldn't cost a landowner an arm an a leg to do this. From the pen and special feeder cost. And it says every poisoned hog has to be buried 18" below ground. What if you poison a group of 30 hogs. The backhoe time to bury 30 hogs won't be cheap. Plus what if you kill 5 a day. 6 days of backhoe time?

Second, I've hunted and trapped hogs for Years. I've seen them travel 3 miles to a wheat field in the evenings, crossing 3 properties. If they die 3 miles away across 2 properties how will the applicator know that, and go about retrieving them? Not everybody is on board poisoning them or letting you retrieve a poisoned hog.
