My 9 year old Laigen made it to her first shooting sports practice yesterday. She made the safety meetings, but had things going on for school and other things that she hasn't been able to shoot.
Laigen had shot at the gun range with her .22 a few times this year and also with her .243 once or twice. She doesn't really like shooting the .243 yet due to kickback so I don't make her shoot if she doesn't want to. Yesterday she was scared of the .22 because the guns the club has are much larger than her Marlin .22 and she thought it was going to kick a lot. She cried because she was scared. I told her she could stop and watch and if she decided to shot later she could. The instructor had her hold the gun and asked if he had permission to scare her a little. I asked what he meant. He went and had her shoulder the rifle and pulled the trigger for her. He then talked to her and said that was it, that was all it would kick.
She was also nervous because they used .22 with a magazine and I never let her touch the rifle other than after I get it set on sand bags, aimed down range or towards a deer, than she shoulders, aims, and pulls the trigger. She needed help loading magazine the first few times but then got the hang of it. She also didn't like the sights in the beginning since she had only looked through a scope previous to this.
First 5 bullets at the first target she didn't hit paper. Instructor told her it could be the sights were way off, just to keep shooting and have fun. Second 5 shots at second target and she got 3 on paper.
They then shot rounds of 10 at the targets. 1st round of 10 was ok, but second round of 10 she did really good!
By the time we cleaned rifles and put everything up, she was asking when the next practice was and that she wanted to come back next week!
Green dots are the second round of 10!
